The V3 version of Danganronpa relies on the prison-industrial complex for victims volunteers, specifically juvenile detention centers. Adolescents are offered lightened sentences for participation and full pardons for winning, thus ensuring the sign-up process is (technically) voluntary. DICE is an activist organization - the acronym is Danganronpa Is (a) Criminal Enterprise - that protests the profiteering off of the vulnerable and works to challenge the draconian laws concerning mild, petty crimes that exist primarily to feed the system.

Everyone in V3 was put in juvie, but it's mostly very petty crimes that wouldn't be prosecuted in a more reasonable society. Himiko always falling asleep in class was perceived as insubordination; Kirumi had a job outside of classes (which is a problem in some Japanese schools); Tsumugi gpt caught pirating obscure, out of print visual novels; Ryoma really did kill a guy. Gonta isn't a delinquent, he just has a learning disability.

THATS SO COOL!!! i had this au where like, extrapolating from the original "it's a school for delinquents" info we had before v3's release, that it's a post-tragedy society that's really sensitive about a second junko popping up, so they take anyone who could "spread despair" or be suceptable to someone making them spread despair and just put them faaarr away from the Normal People

and danganronpa the show was a thing because people are morbidly fascinated with the killing games from the tragedy, kind of ignoring the sociopolitical stuff that led to the tragedy and how junko took advantage of cracks in the system that were already there and their only takeaway being "junko was Evil and has Inherent Evilness (the despair) and as long as we Take Care of other Evil Children then we'll be fine, also the killing games are soooo cool but also i'm paranoid that i'll be abducted for one. kind of like how people view true crime and serial killers, being obsessed with who's a sociopath/narcissist/buzzword-that-means-inherently-evil-of-the-day and being paranoid that they'll be serial killed, even though it's the marginalized and disenfranchised that that are most at risk, just like how its the "bad evil kids" that are put in the killing games and not the comfortable people gawking at their misery

i thought id mention because it sounds like itd mesh super well with your ideas, yk? and of course they'd laser focus on kokichi as the ultimate supreme leader of DICE, the organization that opposes them and is trying to take them down. which is so fucked uppppp
