Today's animal is....
The Baikal Seal!
(Yes i'm doing seals until i run out of them!)
Another earless seal, as that is all i will be posting for a while, this species is endemic to Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia. It's one of the only purely freshwater true seals, along with some ringed and harbor seal subspecies! They are also one of the smallest in the group, with adults averaging 3ft 7in–4ft 7in in lenght
And as always, here's the pup tax. Cute! Looking at you with dem big ol eyes. A fun fact about it, is that most of their diet consists of golomyanka, a fish that is also endemic to lake Baikal. Baikal seals eat more than half of the annually produced biomass of golomyanka. During the winter and spring, golomyanka is more than 90% of their diet. I guess it makes sense for a species contained to only a lake but it made me laugh a lil. Like yeah they eat fish but mostly this specific one. Good for them tbh.
