Snowmageddon is coming to basically the entire eastern half of the US, so here are some tips to prepare off the top of my head! Everyone stay safe out there!
Charge all of your devices and powerbanks.
Search for where you can go if you lose power for a long time and your home becomes inhospitable. Public buildings such as firehouses and churches often have generators and can become emergency shelters. Call your town hall and ask!
Now is your last chance to stock up on essentials! Do you have enough medicine, food, water, hygiene products, and pet supplies to last a few days? Do you have food that doesn't require refrigeration (although you can store frozens outside if the power goes out) and doesn't require being cooked?
Do you have items to help you when it is cold and dark?: Water-resistant snow clothes (boots, gloves, thick coat, hat), hand warmers, rechargeable flashlight or lantern, snow shovel, snow brush for car, blankets in home and in car.
Fill containers with water for drinking, washing, and flushing the toilet
Plan and write down what items you need to take with you in case you need to leave, such as cash, important papers, medicine, hygiene products, a first aid kit, and ways to transport your pets. Write down important addresses and phone numbers in case your phone or internet dies.
Collect some things to entertain yourself without power, such as games, books, and puzzles.
Designate one room to be the "warm room" for if you lose heat. Bring yourself, your pets, and anything you might need (food, water, meds, entertainment) in there. Bundle up and block the doors and windows with blankets to retain heat.
If temperatures get below freezing, especially if your home isn't well-insulated, turn your water on to a slow drip and open sink cabinets to prevent your pipes from freezing. If they freeze, they can burst! Locate your water line switch in your breaker box so that you can turn off the water if there is a burst!
NEVER RUN A GENERATOR, GRILL, OR VEHICLE INSIDE OF YOUR HOUSE OR GARAGE. DOING SO CAN CREATE CARBON MONOXIDE, WHICH CAN KILL YOU.
Fill your vehicle's gas, but do not drive while the roads are snowy unless it is an emergency. Turn on your headlights so others can see you. Drive slowly in snow and ice, especially around turns and coming to stops. If you skid, try to calmly steer the car in the direction you want it to go. IF YOU ARE STRANDED IN YOUR CAR AND MUST KEEP IT ON, CLEAR SNOW FROM AROUND THE TAILPIPE AND OCCASIONALLY CRACK OPEN A WINDOW, OR CARBON MONOXIDE CAN BECOME TRAPPED IN THE CAR.
βοΈ Seriously please educate yourself about carbon monoxide because it kills people every winter!!!!!!
Stay calm and hunker down! It's good to be prepared for a bad scenario, but that doesn't mean that it will happen! Check on your loved ones!
