Not my brain at work today doing wild corkboard theories about Elphaba singing something implied to be Over the Rainbow (or something like it) in the book, but it explicitly involves themes of the afterlife, and then in the musical/films her Unlimited motif is lifted from Over the Rainbow, almost as if to imply that Dorothy died in the cyclone and Oz is a near-death experience, and that perhaps inversely, Elphaba's death (whether actual or faked, depending on which version of course) is functionally what frees her from Oz and makes her truly unlimited — maybe that's what her vision of a celebration throughout Oz during The Wizard and I was trying to tell her: that her unlimited future lies beyond Oz, beyond death, in her afterlife; that to be "so happy [she] could melt", she's got to die. Is Kansas the Ozian afterlife? A place in sepia tone, where Elphaba's skin color is the same as everybody else's, because color doesn't even exist? A place behind the moon? Beyond the rain? Where her troubles melt like lemon drops? Away above the chimney tops?? Is that where you'll find Miss Elphaba Thropp??? Is Kansas, USA, just a shadow on the wall of a cave???? Asking the real questions here.
