I have been staring at this for ages.
edit: original source
we could've gotten a wicked the musical that actually focused on the witches of oz and we could've gotten glinda being nessa's surrogate sister after elphaba left and it would've added to the tragedy of glinda ultimately selling nessa out and an exploration of their parallel experience with loneliness and how their respective leadership roles isolate them instead we got temu male glinda
one of the best musical moments is during nessa's last scene when the no one mourns the wicked motif starts playing and it transitions into glinda's engagement ball music very sickening things happening there stephen schwartz was diabolical for that one
glindarose parallels make me so sick because wdym they're both desperate to fit in and get thrust into isolating leadership roles at an extremely young age and both of them want elphaba to come back and be there for them while their significant other is completely disinterested and tries to leave and in a desperate attempt to regain some sense of control over there lives they end up just hurting the people they love and isolating themselves further

very funny book glinda is like i prefer stupid men i didn't like that my husband was smart that was no fun and then musical glinda intentionally chooses to date the guy who's whole thing is that he's brainless and dumb and then she starts freaking out when he starts thinking like omg this fucking dyke
Come to think of it, "You look positively emerald" might be the only* line in Wicked which specifically highlights Elphaba's greenness as a good thing. There are other times that people say something positive about her appearance, of course, but in this case Elphaba is being seen as desirable because of her skin tone and not despite it or without drawing attention to it. It's really a very sweet moment that shows how much her and Glinda's relationship has grown, and that Glinda has learned not only to accept Elphaba's greenness but to love it.
And this makes what happens afterwards all the more tragic. Not that long after this exchange is perhaps the most negative line about Elphaba's skin in the show, in which it's called "an outward manefestorium of her twisted nature." You can even make the argument that the reason she wasn't stared at, mocked and rejected by the people of the Emerald City originally was because they were all wearing green glasses and couldn't tell that she was green, rather than a genuine acceptance. If this is the case then Glinda is the only person who truly loved her for her differences, and then they're immediately forced apart. But even if the people of the EC really did love and accept her for who she was, it's crushing how quickly Morrible is able to twist that into a reason to hate her.
*"Pink goes good with green" is perhaps another contender, but I don't think it's quite as explicitly complimentary of Elphaba herself -- there's an element of Glinda patting herself on the back for her own styling abilities with that one.
let's all go around and say things we don't like about glinda
Pleased to report the next chapter of my Gelphie grimmerie phone sex emotional infidelity Glinda vaginismus etc fic might actually be happening this time
she's actually here. this chapter asks the bold question "what if glinda was celibate for 5 years and then had a fling with an Elphaba doppelganger who bullies her as a way to assuage her guilt/grief." and what's the answer? you'll have to read it and find out
unfortunately gelphie never quite makes it into the category of toxic yuri for me. at least musical/movie gelphie doesn't. there are certainly aspects of their relationship/circumstances that create conflict in the story, but fundamentally their relationship and love for each other is stronger than anything that divides them and the difficulties in their relationship are resolved because they make each other better. glinda's mean to elphaba for about half of the first act, but then the ozdust happens and she and elphaba seem to be on good terms and have a healthy, mutually fulfilling relationship up until they're put in an impossibly difficult situation that forces them to part and drives a wedge between them
and i know #some people like to pretend that galinda's comments during popular are proof that she's a horrible toxic friend but ultimately "you're beautiful" and "you can do anything" had much more of an impact on elphaba than offhand song lyrics that clearly don't bother her. elphaba also makes it clear from their first meeting that she's not going to tolerate glinda's bs or accept scraps of performative goodness. i'm sure they both still have their insecurities and issues with the other person post-ozdust, but this isn't like jackieshauna where their insecurities and repressed homosexual lust are eroding both of them and their relationship even before being thrown into the canadian wilderness. had everything with the wizard not happened they probably would've figured things out and gotten together and been a happy loving couple
and i don't even think act ii/post-canon gelphie really falls into toxic yuri category even though glinda gets elphaba's sister killed by a house. cuz you can imagine a rhaenicent kind of situation where it's like "i will always long the past when things were simple between us but the sheer amount of pain and hurt you've caused me and my family is too much for me to move past" but gelphie literally have a whole song where they forgive each other and the fascist government is defeated with the power of their love and by them coming together. the resolution of the story requires them uniting, and even though they have to part the story makes clear their love for each other is still there, tethering them. and ig you could call that toxic codependency and it probably is but that kind of ignores framing and the wider themes the story is trying to impart
obviously there's conflict because there needs to be conflict in a story and they severely hurt each other, but ultimately gelphie's relationship is about forgiveness, understanding, unconditional love, and how the people around you can change your life forever and make you better. calling gelphie toxic yuri doesn't work in my mind because by the end most of their negative traits/insecurities are resolved because of their love for each other. once the dust of the story has settled it's hard to imagine them having a relationship that's more corrosive and harmful than uplifting and beneficial, which differentiates them from what i would consider true toxic yuri. calling it toxic yuri would be like calling pride and prejudice a toxic relationship because darcy is a dick to elizabeth and dissuades bingley from marrying jane and miss the part where he specifically gets better cuz of his love for elizabeth
book gelphie on the other hand. well.

see glinda's mistake was forgiving elphaba in the bridge of for good. because in the book when elphaba asked sarima for forgiveness and sarima refused her elphaba was like okay well i guess i have no choice but to hang around and thoroughly befriend you. whereas glinda forgave elphaba and elphaba fucked off into the desert immediately
it's so incredibly frustrating the insane burden of proof people seem to have with lesbian relationships so that people will see a kiss between two women where one says "hold out my sweet" and be like well it's not strictly romantic maybe they're just really good friends why are you insisting that it must be romantic when no one would ever hold this standard to a m/m or f/m relationship. we very much make lesbian attraction and love between women invisible or jump through crazy hoops trying to insist it's not romantic. why are we so afraid of just definitively unambiguously saying two women have romantic affection for each other? even gregory gets on my nerves sometimes with this cuz i do understand the importance of ambiguity and characters protecting their privacy in the wicked years i really do and i understand how it ties into the wider themes but how hard is it to just be like these two women had romantic/sexual feelings for each other or they had sex with each other why must lesbian relationships always exist in the margins or in implication? but to be fair to gregory i do wonder if he was aware of this and this colored some of the decisions he made writing ozma/rain's ending in the another day series
gelphie taught us that if you bother someone consistently enough, they'll eventually fall in love with you
the only time i've gotten mildly close to feeling any kinship with fiyero tigelaar is when johnny made some offhand comment about he probably got sent to boarding school as a child because, yeah, boarding school will fuck you up. i'm sorry you went through that. unfortunately every single person to come out of my boarding school is genuinely evil so it's just more proof that he's a terrorist tbh
people denying that gelphie's book kiss is strictly romantic are dumb for a lot of reasons. besides the obvious homophobia of "it says these two women kissed but it didn't specify on the lips" that no one would apply if it were two men or a man and a woman, it also ignores what elphaba's saying in that moment. because she's not just saying goodbye to glinda--she's asking her to hold out. elphaba knows she has to leave shiz and glinda behind and she doesn't know if or when she'll be able to go back, but she wants glinda to hold out for her. elphaba is willing to give up everything for the greater good, but she still wants glinda to wait for her and be there for her should she come home. it's incredibly romantic and i don't really think it makes sense for her to request that of someone she just considers friend

Elphaba and Glinda's yuri levels were skyrocketing too high they had to bomb them with the het nuke (most basic unloveable white guy you've ever seen)
colwen grounds gelphie is sooooooo cuz the entire time they're reuniting and having their falling out you have to keep in mind that glinda is dressed like this. mind you this is nessa's funeral
