so hard to figure out where the fuck the line is between advertising for my webnovel and spoiling the dope shit
i think Gwen Facts are a safe bet. she shows up early in the story, makes her morals (or lack thereof) pretty clear, and it’s instantly made obvious that she’s bullshit and terrifying from the moment the other characters start talking about her. also she’s the funniest rival/love interest i could have possibly written because she’s SO evil and SO gay and thinks she’s an ethical straight woman
so in Occult Overdrive, characters can alchemically enhance their bodies to get stronger/faster/more durable/etc., and you can distribute those stats however you want. your generic enhancement suite boosts everything kind equally and just makes you generically Better at fighting
Gwen said fuck that noise i’m designing a custom enhancement suite that only buffs my right eye, my right optic nerve, and the image processing center of my brain, and I’m designing it such that it can be stacked. and then i’m recruiting six other alchemists to give me the same treatment. There are diminishing returns and negative side effects but there’s also a lot of symbolic significance in layering it sevenfold, and the end results speak for themselves
you see, for an alchemist to control physical matter, they have to understand it on a deep level. most alchemists focus on manipulating a single material—water, or steel, or cement, or what have you. and time spent learning new materials is time spent not getting better at what you can already control, so most alchemists just carry a hunk of whatever they’re good at manipulating around with them
but Gwen sees the world in such extreme, ridiculous detail that she bypasses that limitation. she understands physical matter like no one else, and so she can manipulate all physical matter.
this is precisely as lethal and unfair as it sounds
she has a whole fight scene where her internal monologue is nothing but her obsessively breaking down her last interaction with the protagonist, and the whole time she's effortlessly killing her opponents on autopilot.
