Chapter 2: 'The Fibonacci Sequence'
Chapter 2 of 6. Link on AO3

From Chapter 2:
Here, in the Headless Woman pub, here in the quiet that settles after the applause finishes, he grins at her, and talks about celebrating in âdog years.â She blows at the sparkler on her Sno-Ball, an exercise in futility. Mulder looks at her from across the table, eyes glinting, hair flopping, chewing on a straw like a kid, the picture of health, of all-American manhood. He reaches into his bag and pulls out a small white box, wrapped in a ribbon. He wouldnât, she thinks. He wouldnât throw his lot into the grave like this, even Mulder wouldnât.
This is part of 'The Work of An Instant', a series of stories in which Mulder and Scully share a moment of sudden realization about their feelings for one another, while they are surrounded by other people. Each story stands alone, and can be read by itself.
