A good beta is hard to find, and if you're lucky enough to get one who is also an English teacher (like @leiascully,) never let her go. Beta-ing is a 2-way street, and you can often start up a relationship with a comparable author by feedbacking a story you like and offering to beta for them.
Yes! It’s definitely helpful to be in a similar place with your writing in terms of developing that relationship. You and I are able to ask each other delightfully specific questions and to articulate our reasoning in our answers. We have a common vocabulary about it. And I trust you when you tell me to cut back on my poetic fits, and you trust me to examine your interrobangs. The best beta relationships allow that mutual support and mutual development, although certainly we have all asked more experienced writers to read things and help us from time to time when we were starting out as writers.
