This was astonishingly clear. And towards the end I realized that this is the guy and the group who made the virtual hangar I have downloaded on my Meta Quest 3 but havenāt opened yet!
Student Pilot Emergency When Instructor Passes OutEpisode 1 of Air Traffic Control StoriesStudent pilot Max Sylvester had not spent more tha
Such a harrowing experience to be IN THE AIR, on one of your FIRST flights and the instructor is just incapacitated. The guys in ATC really had his back and coached him through the entire ordeal. I loved how they stayed so calm and reassuring. But also, mad respect to the student pilot who kept a cool head and showed incredible bravery in a gut-twisting, life-or-death scenario.

No joking. I really āenjoyedā this montage of failed or problematic landings. Its not āLOL, FAILā
Itās about watching what choices the pilots/crew made in difficult situations for better or for worse. I think one of the best was the passenger jet coming in during the thunderstorm and ultimately deciding to abort the landing and begin climbing again. Just a really good reminder of how important it is to stay flexible and adapt on the fly, even if it means aborting a necessary maneuver.

#Graham Harbman flight school in San Jose, CA, prepares you to be a safe, competent pilot. Graham's Ground School is located at Reid-Hillvie

On the 25th of January, 2025 Iāll be taking my first class in Ground School!
āYou are the "CEO" of your training, so you can start and stop with anyone whenever you want. It's your money after all!ā
So I had my first class with Graham. Lovely man.
But this class is not for me.
To begin with I really like Grahamās stated learning methodology of not just what the rules are but why they exist, not just what we need to memorize but why we need to memorize it, not just what the knowledge is to pass the test, but why we need to know it. Thatās always been how Iāve learned. Iāve annoyed plenty of teachers by asking ābut why?ā
However, that was not the experience out of the gate. The man had us underlining key words in the legal flight regulations but then moving on to the next paragraph when it could have been so much simpler, straightforward, and less confusing. And for a beginning to fly course there was a lot of implicit āyouāve probably heard thisā without further explanation of what he assumed weād heard. If I had to ask for clarification on everything he said that assumed we already partially knew it the class would have been an extra hour.
Secondly, I joined this class because people said the class sizes were small and Graham takes the time to answer all your questions, thatās great.
But when I walked in there were 3 times more people in the classroom than it could accommodate so I ended up in a folding chair along the wall with my notebook in my lap for 3 hours.
Thirdly, nail in the coffin. I need clarity and organization from the group Iām going to learn to fly with. I am litigious and orderly when things are important and on some level I need my flight school to be as well. Not rigid and severe, but at least organized and clear.
Even though he outlined to me the materials needed for class as the 2025 FAR/AIM manual, a VFR Sectional Chart for San Francisco valid till Feb 20th, as well as an E6B Flight Computer and Sectional Plotter it wasnāt until the middle of the first class that he revealed the extra books weād need to invest in.
He listed 4 ADDITIONAL texts we needed to acquire and one of them was only made and printed (and sold) by AeroDynamic. Fine. Iāll get whatever I need because Iām serious about this as a career.
After class I waited to speak with the one person working the front desk. Obviously there were a lot of people with questions. After the pair of gentlemen asking about booking CFIās and aircraft is another gentleman with a lengthy question. Then he asks ācan I get one of those Private Pilot handbooksā
āWe only have one physical copyā
āIs there no digital asset?ā
āNo we just print these ourselves, but we have one copy, do you want it?ā
He buys the last copy, what Iāve been waiting 10-15 minutes to ask about. Iām told theyāre printing more and that they āshouldā be available before our next class.
This text is apparently important for the course. The last ground school was in October. They knew this would be a heavily attended course and yet no one put in the print order until right before the session started.
When I worked food service I said āif you want to know how clean the kitchen is, look at the bathrooms. The same people clean both spaces.ā Obviously thereās a different level of attention but it gives you some idea. What I see here is a āseat-of-the-pantsā approach. And when it comes to flying, thatās exactly the kind of reactionary, lack of planning, casual approach I want to avoid.
I dropped the course as soon as I could and went with my back up choice.
While this other ground school is not in person it IS with the club I wanted to do my flying with and they have an actual clubhouse with a lounge where I can sit-down, hang out, study, and talk to people passing through.
The instructor got back to me very quickly and gave me a thorough overview of what she expects. Iām VERY excited about this course which starts immediately after my birthday.
I have to thank Graham, especially for helping me see what I want and need in my training. But also for the confidence to withdraw and go through all the steps to collect my refund for the untaken classes. In his own words:
āYou are the "CEO" of your training, so you can start and stop with anyone whenever you want. It's your money after all!ā
Thanks Graham, youāre right.
Peaceful skies to you.
Chance of dying in an aviation related incident? 1 in 11 MILLION!
Iām safer in the air than on the ground.

Hey trans friends in the US, has your state made it difficult or next to impossible to get the healthcare you need? Can't afford to leave home and/or want to stay and fight? Yah me too.
Well I know of many, many sky friends spread throughout the us who would like to go on a free little weekend sky adventure. :]
Check em out and chat about em with even more friends.
Ps: they also help those with uteruses go on a safe vaycay too āØļøāØļø
The pilots giving a hand are highly experienced professionals(unlike me, I'm still a newbieš ), most who fly the big planes for work also own little planes either for fun &/or to keep up their skills. Pilots often use their little birds to hop around to visit friends far away anyways, so what's a few more flights to a friend in need?
We connect passengers to volunteer pilots for travel at no cost to access the healthcare they need.
Btw if anyone wants to help in any way pilots, mechanics, funds, people organizing, or just anything in general, contact them and see what you can offer.
Or hell, since it seems we're gonna be in this hellscape for a long time (hopefully not) if you have the means too, look into becoming a pilot or plane mechanic yourself. Cant afford too? Check out the National Gay Pilot's Association, they offer scholarships for a local flying or a&p school near you. Being real, it's not easy, ngl. But worth :]
In case this post/I get nuked or for whatever, uuuuh it'd be good if all 5000+ of yall made a post (not just a reblog) of this too. + It'd be good if more people can get the news thru other reaches too, like on other socials, etc. I've met the organizers of this and many pilots and other volunteers. They're genuinely good people/ excellent and the ones I know are very safe pilots.
Fun facts!

Stages of Editing a Fashion-style Portrait
This was the final edit of an image I took of Brittany in 2016.
I had just begun to experiment with studio lighting and high end photo editing.
I did not do a great job. She is overexposed and very pale and the cool red and blue lights I used on the background can barely be seen.
This is the RAW file with no processing.
RAW files are a bit underwhelming by design. The white balance isn't accurate and she still looks pale.
This is initial processing. The white balance and color saturation are more accurate, but I have revealed a lighting mistake that I did in several photoshoots from that era. The lights were too direct and caused glare off the skin.
Thankfully I was able to reduce those highlights. I also did a clean up pass to fix temporary blemishes and get rid of stray and flyaway hairs.
And this is the dodge and burn pass to help add dimensionality to the face. Using a longer lens can flatten facial features so by adding carefully placed highlights and shadows you can undo a bit of that flatness.
When I compared this photo to other photos I've taken of Brittany, I felt her skin looked darker than it should have beenādespite my color correction. I think the red gel on the background light spilled onto her skin and caused this.
So I attempted to adjust her skin tone to match reference photos.
Here is the before/after from 2016/2024.
I think that is quite an improvement from the 2016 version.
At least I hope it is. It's hard to judge things objectively when you have been staring at them for hours.
