when we were talking about the finals/presentations week schedule with my chinese teacher, my friend told her “friday is miscellaneous presentations” and my teacher was so confused bc she genuinely thought that the school had hired someone named Ms. Elany and that she was giving presentations Friday
i love her so much honestly
Do you know any french langblrs that aren't super advanced?
Attention langblrs! Please reblog this post if you’re beginner or intermediate in French!
pretty beginner here! i took intermediate french this past school year but i skipped into it from teachers knowing that i’m good at languages. still have a lot of vocab to catch up on, but i can have a conversation :)
for real tho, now that i’ve graduated (minus the one essay i still gotta turn in) i’d love to chat with any upcoming juniors/seniors about life in general or if y’all have got any questions
hi there! i'm struggling with learning french and i think i'm falling behind with the vocabulary and just general fluency in speaking french. i was thinking about reading french articles and getting used to the language, then specifically translating all the words to expand my vocab. however i feel like this would be too tedious and i might not get anything out of it. what do you suggest? merci x
hey!! sorry this is super late but here goes
if you’re struggling with vocabulary, i would definitely say yes, expose yourself to more french literature, audio, media, etc. translating all of the words is definitely too tedious, especially since you probably know a lot of the words already!! if you’re just beginning, i would recommend starting with a news article each day and only translating the words you don’t know.
if you’re gonna try something longer or more complex, pick up a novel! this is my method for learning vocabulary from reading, in case it helps you.
with regards to fluency, the problem might be pronunciation or focus. this is where you need to be listening a lot. if you have netflix, pretty much any netflix original is available in french audio. you could try the parroting technique to speak faster, where you pause the video and do your best to repeat what they said. (this is especially helpful if your problem is pronunciation or remembering the conversation.)
if your problem with fluency is not being able to think fast enough, it probably just comes back to vocabulary! i’m sure you can speak and think very fast in your native language, which means the problem is finding the words in your target language (french). for this, i’d recommend a LOT of vocabulary drills. aim for speed; you can use an electronic flashcard program (i recommend anki or quizlet) or play games where you have to think of certain types of words as fast as possible (based on first letter, categories, synonyms, etc.).

Here are 7 emotions foreign languages have words for, but English doesn’t!
[long-winded definition of word that just means “sad”]
[wild misinterpretation of idiomatic phrase]
[plagiarised entry from The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows]
[not actually an emotion]
[stark illustration that author doesn’t understand how loanwords work]
[neologism used once by one particular 19th Century poet]
[obligatory appearance of “schadenfreude”]
ok y’all i can explain why but basically i’m looking for a language that:
uses a non-latin script
has defined patterns (things like conjugations, gender, etc.)
basically i love french + spanish because of their patterns, but learning them isn’t super exciting because i’d like to learn another writing system. i’ve taken chinese for 2 years and it’s really fun because of the writing system, but it doesn’t make as much sense to me because it doesn’t have the defined patterns of romance languages.
i’m considering arabic or japanese for a happy medium, but any other suggestions?
hi guys :)
i’ve officially graduated high school and made a college decision - i’ll be attending middlebury next year :)
really excited, sorry i’ve been out for like a month - APs and finals and crazy things got in the way. message me about your own lives!!
Hello everyone! As a 2nd year B.A. student majoring in literature, I thought I would give some tips to other people about essay writing in a literary context, especially for stuff other than the outlines, as a lot of studyblrs already give very good tips about outlines. I am available to answer any question you may have about this guide, so please don’t hesitate! This guide will be a step-by-step walkthrough on how to prepare and write literary essays. Find the first part on how to prepare essays here.

what she says: im fine
what she means: in Friends, Chandler was always considered very average and not that attractive, in fact the very base of his character was that he was the funny/goofy one, Ross was the smart one, and that Joey was the cute one, but Chandler was actually remarkably intelligent and hardworking, as well as the fact Matthew Perry was a very attractive man, whereas Ross most often got himself into awkward shenanigans and Joey was often very goofy. Chandler was the best of all three of them put together, without some of the other two's worse attributes (Ross' tendency to ramble on, Joey's grudge-holding, Ross' quick temper, etc), yet somehow it was considered by pretty much everybody in the Friends universe that Monica was a catch for Chandler and he should feel honoured to be dating her... Chandler was a brilliant character and it is unacceptable that his most prominent attribute, his comedy, has become recognisably his only positive attribute.

Susanna’s French Verb Masterpost!
Hello! I’ve been inundated recently with messages from lovely studyblrs asking me to post the verbs from my French verb wall - so voilá! I’m really sorry for the delay, I’ve been meaning to get around to it for ages, but what with oral exams, art projects, geography projects, graduation planning and general Head Girl stuff it’s been hectic.
I hope these help a few of you out, I know from experience how difficult it is to find a concise collection of all the French verbs (or certainly those necessary for the Leaving Cert/similar exams). I love having these stuck up on my wall beside my desk, they make French homework an absolute doddle. And by the way, my mum is a French teacher, so you can rest assured that this isn’t a load of ol’ inaccurate baloney!
Hope you all have a splendid day!
When you don't want to revise
• Make flashcards • Make a summary sheet of either what you’ve just done or to see how much of a topic you remember •Go through the summary sheet with a different colored pen and add things you missed out or did wrong • Make a mind-map of your topic • Try making a grid with point and reason/effect columns • If you need one make a formula sheet/ quick overview of key concepts sheet ( pretty handy for RE,sociology, maths and the sciences) • identify key words/ phrases • Go through an exam question leisurely- sounds stupid but it’s better that you understand the process you have to go through when working something out • Summarize your case studies/ experiments/ tests that you have to know so there is less to learn later

as promised, pics!!
//ok to reblog, pls don’t delete caption or repost!
Sup home skillet!( new nickname if you're okay with it!) I noticed you had really epic notes and that you said you had a masterpost for them but I can't find it, could you shoot me the link to it? Thanks!
Hi! Thanks :) I actually…. haven’t made that masterpost yet (because I am an epic procrastinator; its been a year, I know orz)
Usually my final exam notes would look like this:
above: usually a booklet with a contents page, coloured tabs, each section w a different heading scheme colour. Handwritten comments added after practicing past exams
As to how I took notes during uni, my method was very similar to that outlined by @strive-for-da-best (see links below), cept I used microsoft word
Cornell Method using OneNote
How to use OneNote
How I use OneNote for University by @vanessastudies (bonus!)
+ for those who use MS word - I achieved my layout (e.g. headings, table of contents etc) using styles (see tutorial here by @mechanicalmisfit)
BUT I AIN’T GONNA LEAVE YOU HANGING, so here’s a bunch of other posts I’ve made which tangentially address my note taking method + some advice from other studyblrs:
How I prepare my exam notes + using sticky tabs (Law focussed though)
How to avoid vomiting a rainbow (aka how to colour code)
Where I intend to post my series on notetaking
This reply by @sundayscholar
The notetaking section of this masterpost by @areistotle
How to take notes from a textbook by @elkstudies
How to colour code a highlight effectively by @graphis
Colour coding - history by @thelogicofthetrance
Using sticky notes by @etudiance
