After 9 months of work, my Oseberg tapestry sweater is complete!
This was my first sweater knitted in the round, first stranded colourwork project, and my first time steeking. It was definitely my most challenging project so far, and a lot of learning and research was involved. I used a colourwork chart created by the very talented Molly Gifford, which is available for free on Ravelry
For reference, this is one of the fragments uncovered from the gravesite:
Some scholars think that the Oseberg tapestry includes the earliest known artistic depiction of Odin's ravens, Huginn and Muninn. So I added them to the sleeves as a little Easter egg.
Recent collage work.

as an apology for tumblr always getting my zines posted last you get one (one) early zine.
i knew from the start i wanted to cut out cardboard stegosauruses for this and have some rocks and that was kind of it at first. i was originally thinking about using some maps of the english channel but i didn't have any on me when i made this so had to come up with another plan. i had some stone texture patterned paper but not enough for the whole background so i had to strategically cut and place it only in the visible areas and use cardboard scraps to fill in the gaps. my next layer was rock formation diagrams which i have tons of because i regularly use old kids encyclopaedias and don't tend to have much use for them so this was perfect. i then layered cardboard scraps over the diagrams then over thay i added photos of fossils/rocks/coastlines from the encyclopaedia and lastly added the cardboard stegosauruses. for the stegosaurus i decided to have them as slightly ripped cardboard instead of just the corrugated insides because one i like the texture and two it is much harder to cut smaller shapes when you're missing a full layer of cardboard. i really love how this zine came out and i am so glad it scanned okay despite how thick the cardboard was compared to the paper.
also experimenting with adding close ups of each spread so it's easier to read and clearer for people who aren't used to seeing flat zine scans
i do think theres something sad about how largely only the literature that's considered especially good or important is intentionally preserved. i want to read stuff that ancient people thought sucked enormous balls
Time to take this post entirely too seriously:
I often wonder if this is why you so commonly see the sentiment that we are in an era of uniquely bad literature, or at least that the fact that most books don't have artistic aspirations and are not aiming to be anything other than mindless entertainment is new. In fact what's new is the idea that everything is worth preserving (and also the internet making it easier to preserve it). The dumb artistically unambitious trash books of the past have survived only sporadically, because people thought of them as literally disposable.
When I was in college I had a professor who was an expert on detective fiction. He had a longstanding beef with the idea that "Murders in the Rue Morgue" was the first detective story. He thought that it seemed way too polished to be inventing a new genre, and also that the whole orangutan business had the vibe of someone subverting preexisting audience expectations and maybe engaging in a bit of stealth parody. With the help of some student volunteers, he went trawling through old magazines and newspapers and found hundreds of detective stories from the early 1800s that just hadn't garnered enough individual attention to be remembered. This was because most of them sucked balls. He created an online archive of them, so you too can read these mostly terrible stories.

A digital copy of a zine I made in collaboration with Amanda Laughtland, Your World Hangs, back in 2018. It's a tiny work, and I like it more than I remembered.

I was looking for something unrelated and stumbled upon these printmaking pieces from 2019, which I never posted, despite being far and away some of the best stuff I've ever done.
The theme was outsider musicians. In order: The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, The Children of Sunshine (and Langley Schools Music Project), The Shaggs, and Connie Converse.

RISOSF9450EIIU - Is a zine made during my stay at Pencil Urchin Press and was created in collaboration with P.U.P co-founder Devyn Park.
The photography present within the zine was documented with our respective Nintendo 3DS systems in and around Kona, HawaiĘ»i. The captured images were subsequently paired with iconography relating to both the 3DS and Risograph machine. The visual dialogue between the textural and variable nature of both the 3DS picture quality and Risograph prints create a hazy, dreamscape that welcomes readers to treasure outdated/niche methods of image making.Â
The zines are staple-bound 8 page booklets, printed in cornflower blue, yellow, fluorescent pink, and black inks on an SF9450 duplicator.Â
To learn more about the project click here!
And if you'd like to support me and get your own copy of the zine you can find them here!
2nd print run of this zine is now up in my shop!
