Iâve also been in a lot fandoms and yeah, the treatment of writers in this one is particularly weird Iâve noticed. I donât know if it seems worse because of the sheer size of the fandom or what, but everyone feels so entitled and rude. Mainly on the bird app.
iâm sure it is just the amount of people making it seem worse than it is for sure. iâve just never been exposed to this much rudeness directed towards writers. telling people what to write, what not to write, how they should write it, publicly tweeting screenshots being like hey i didnât like this!!! thereâs a lot of things i donât like to read about but thatâs a me thing u know. :â) some things just need to stay in the group chat #ToMe
iâm 31 and iâve been reading fanfic since i was 11 so one can imagine iâve been in many many many fandoms. and the heated rivalry fandom is by far the Weirdest towards fic writers.

If you have a fucked up sicknasty fanfic you've been thinking about sharing but are unsure, this post is your sign to run to AO3 and Just Do It: 1. Someone somewhere wants to read it. Even if it's only one person, that person matters
2. Your creativity matters and so does your ability to share it
3. Serial harassers in fandom spaces are beginning to express discomfort that sites like AO3 completely strip their ability to do anything about fic they don't like, sometimes going as far as leaving entire fandoms due to the influx of "problematic fiction without a chance for consequences to the author". Posting your fanworks to AO3 actively contributes to making harassers feel unsafe and powerless in fandom
4. Militant anti-fanfic content creators also cannot do anything about fic posted to AO3
5. You can post anonymously to AO3, with the ability to de-anonymize at any time
6. You can moderate comments before making them visible on your fic, restrict comments to logged-in users only, or turn off comments altogether, meaning you can post anonymously and completely turn off comments if you choose
no no no put me back in the loop I almost did it perfect please put me back just a few more tries and I think I could really nail it please put me back
Why does everyone think fiction is just fantasy wish fulfillment now and not like an exploration of themes and ideas
People will be like âthis movie is evil and gross because it depicts a predatory relationshipâ and then you watch the movie in question and itâs about how preying on young women is bad and impacts their lives negatively
âWhy would they do this instead of just making everyone in the movie nice and normal and goodâ so we would have this conversationâŚ.
If fiction is only a commodity, then a writer is a mere content producer, or as McGurl puts it, a "servant" and a "service provider" while the reader is a "consumer." If a writer is a service working - a corporate employee/contractor - it naturally follows that a work of fiction is a service and is judged on whether it fulfills that service accordingly. [...] There's a subtle but key difference between being socially permitted to have your own opinion about whether something was good - whether it met your version of the implicit contract - and the decision that you are "owed" customer satisfaction in a literal, actionable sense. If you read a book or saw a movie and you didn't like it, you're allowed to say so: but it's not a mattress, and you don't get your money back. But on the other hand, if a novel or film or TV show isn't art, only more stuff you bought, then the writer does owe you, as does the corporation who sold you that product, from whom you can demand everything you want.

hey everyone, just curious:
what is everyone's criteria for blocking people?
