Whumpee develops different personas and coping mechanisms for each one, explaining it to themselves as letting part of them rest while another part plays a role (and having to work feels easy after having been put through pain, having “consensual” sex means they get “looked after” and that can feel nice, but being humiliated is almost cathartic after having to pretend they wanted it, and torture at least doesn't require their collaboration, or even feels dignified compared to the rest- every one thing is a break from the others). They fall into a routine where they know how to manage each whumper, and end up acting very differently depending on who's in the room with them.

Whumpee still biting and snarling at Whumper but they're now flinching whenever Whumper moves too fast

Refusing to scream but now letting out whimpers

Whumpee glaring at Whumper the whole time as they get on their knees.

Snapping back at Whumper constantly but immediately shutting their mouth when Whumper brings up a specific punishment

Still tugging on Whumper when they're dragged to the torture room but now also going limp when they eventually reach their destination

"For fuck's sake can you just give me a break for one day? Just one fucking day." "Hm, before you would have shouted at me the entire time. Now you want a break? My my, you've changed Whumpee." "Yeah well, I don't like getting beaten. That's all."

-maybe they hold in-depth knowledge that deems them suspicious because how could they know all these things about whumper?

-maybe some of the evidence they use/find is from their own abuse, maybe it's someone else who finds it,

'look, I found a new tape of one of whumper's victims!'

'wait, no, no, not that one. please don't look at it.'

-maybe they need to encounter whumper again, either by chance or when they are finally captured. good whump reveal when it turns out the detective does know whumper (especially if their friends thinks it's because they were working with whumper and accuse them of betrayal)

-Whumpee being allowed to sit on the couch, because they never were before.

-Caretaker not knowing what they liked aside from food and sleep at first so they buy them treats and blankets and stuffed animals, making the uncomfortable connection after walking past the pet aisle in the store.

-Caretaker and Whumpee playing catch with a tennis ball as a form of physical therapy/connection, because it was one of the few activities that wasn’t completely nerve wracking for Whumpee.

-Whumpee wearing a lanyard with a name tag and Caretakers phone number because speaking, especially to strangers, was still very difficult. Caretaker hated the idea of them basically wearing a collar, but hated the idea of them getting lost or not having a way to call home more. They add a few speech cards to it once they realize it would be helpful, and that’s better.

-Whumpee and Caretaker going on long walks, with Caretaker reminding them that no one was in danger, the people walking by weren’t going to hurt them, everything was fine.

-Whumpee slowly getting more comfortable before they start undoing the conditioning, so they’d lay in Caretakers lap, mentally pledging their loyalty as Caretaker smoothed their hair out of their face and rested a hand on their back.

-Whumper gazing at Caretaker with the kind of love and devotion that felt inhuman. They couldn’t regain their sense of self, their humanity in just weeks, but they could build trust, and they trusted Caretaker, trusted them to let them rebuild.

-Whumpee not eating without permission, standing stock still “in position” unless told to move, walking one step behind Caretaker whenever they were out, never slouching, never relaxed.

-Tensing and closing their eyes instead of fully flinching, expecting to be struck whenever anyone was too close but still staying.

Starting out biting and kicking and screaming, lashing out at anyone who gets close like a rabid dog.

When they run out of energy to thrash, they’re spitting insults, hurling threats and curses at everyone in earshot.

By the time they can’t shout anymore, they’re sneering and flipping the bird at anyone who can see them.
