I didn't know going into it that this was a Dr. Who spinoff, which explains why it was such a flop but still looks really cool.

Thank god for the 10s skip button! The skill and chemistry of the two leads are the only thing keeping it afloat. For some reason it's bogged down with a massive ensemble cast of goverment goons no one cares about. There's a blonde goverment lady who gets extended screentime dictated by bad writing, and a love interest culled by cringe dialogue. I suspect she's a character who's appeared in Dr. Who that fans wanted more of, but wasn't very compelling without context.

The white guy everyman lead was likable and i enjoyed his family (he had a nonbinary kid!) but lbr everyone was here for the romance between him and the fish lady and it was NOT given enough development. The pretext of this show (and the romance/development of political factions) could have been massively improved if Russell T. Davies had watched a few episodes of The Expanse.

Gugu the fish lady made her dramatic first appearance by throwing giant shell egg things on the floor and declaring that ocean pollution killed her children prematurely, and that was the reason for the titular war. I cannot BELIEVE these two fucked (in a tame BBC cutaway) but the subject of mating and reproduction NEVER came up???? She OPENED negotiations with her sad dead egg children. She handpicked that man as her favorite human and he also never asks on screen "Hey what happens when we fuck?"

WHERE ARE THE SPECIAL AQUA HUMAN HYBRIDS??? WHY WAS FISH LADY'S GENDER SWAPPING INTO A MALE PHENOTYPE WHEN THREATENED ONLY A ONE-OFF THING?? WHY WAS HIS EX WIFE WEIRDLY JEALOUS OF HER?
