You took the Lord’s name in vain. No I didn’t, Janet. I found it very useful, actually.
The Nice Guys (2016) dir. Shane Black
some True Detective studies! one of my favorite shows of all time, I consider all seasons to be good (still have to watch season 4), but season 1 is… on another level. flawless. perfect. one can’t admire it enough
No yall don't get it. They are brothers bc if they weren't they would have to be something else.
Niall couldn't look at all of the horrible things Ruben does and say, yeah obviously I still want him in my life hes my brother. If you love a man as more than a friend he has to be family. There's not another option. Its 1987, the middle of the aids crisis, and as not politically correct as it is now the public view WAS that it was different for men than it was for lesbians. that's part of why Niall is so freaked out bc what is wrong with him that he doesn't just like men, he likes Ruben, who's violent and temperamental and often cruel. If liking someone as clean cut and sweet as Alby is shameful, then what the fuck is Ruben supposed to be? And Ruben has been to jail. Hes a boxer. He knows by now what happens if you like men more than you should, and hes been surrounded by toxic masculinity day after day. If he wants Niall to be his anything, or to be Niall's anything, it has to be his brother because its the only thing bigger than friends that isn't lovers. They be weirdly close, they can sleep in the same bed, they can even claim each other's last names if they really want to and it is all mostly hidden by the only family dynamic two boys of the same age are allowed to have.
And one could argue they are step brothers, but they aren't. Their mom's aren't married- gay marrige isn't even legalized in Scotland until 2014, and we don't know when Rubens mom dies. Theres a good chance they never become real step brothers. Sure they knew each other well growing up, but they didnt live together until they were teenagers. Its a bit im-my-own-grandpa for sure but not incest. I havs a bunch of dudes who were almost cousins but that doesn't make them my cousins. Their mom's could break up and they'd literally be fine. But they cant do that, so they decide to be family forever, binding themselves together with a love they won't define in a society that wouldn't let them define it even if they wanted to. So they make the choice to put themselves in this cage, they did it on purpose, and even though things grow and times change their relationship never had a shot bc it was doomed by the world it got brought up in.

Richard gadd pioneering a genre of gay tv previously unseen outside of my dead dove ao3 bookmarks just wasn't something i ever considered could happen
I think a lot of writers might benefit from giving themselves permission to get weird with format.
Use second person, drop classic rising action and climax format, write backwards, just sit in a moment, tell all you want and refuse to show, make an entire book that’s just one run on sentence, reject tropes, use all tropes, cliche yourself to death, produce something that’s completely gibberish. Break all the rules of marketability. Become ungovernable.
Write a story that just takes place inside one pathetic little person’s head. Do it. It’s enrichment in your enclosure.
Do the writer’s equivalent of playing with finger paints. Do it do it do it do it do it do it do it do it do it do it do it do it
It’s the middle of the night and I should be sleeping but listen. Listen. Just get weird with it. Open your soul up a little bit. Like actually don’t worry about it being palatable. I’m serious. Get weirder. Get weirder right now. I’m demanding that you get weirder right now. It’s not your responsibility to make your reader feel good. It’s your job to make art, goddamnit. Make art. Make weird art. Open up your third eye and eat an entire cheesecake.
Once you start noticing how the incapacity to handle discomfort affects how people live their lives it's actually pretty shocking how it ruins pretty much every conceivable aspect of existence. Interpersonal relationships, romantic and platonic. Career and education opportunities. Your politics Your willingness to go anywhere. The kind of food you eat. The kind of art you expose yourself to and your ability to read it. It's never just one thing, it touches everything, and once you notice it it's like suddenly being able to see germs or something. Just this horrific catastrophe people look at you askance for screaming about. As I grow older and see what became of my friends and peers who could not learn to handle discomfort, the more I'm like. This is a genuine societal issue
all i want for 2026 is that gigantic rancid AI bubble to finally burst in such a catastrophic way that the consequences will be so good and i'll never have to see another AI generated image ever again

I was talking about this with a friend but a really interesting cultural shift over the last ohhhhhh ten years maybe is that many people in fandoms view themselves as stakeholders and not audience members. Because of that, they think that the fandom should be running things, or at least have an acknowledged say in how something is run. And every reminder that they are not in control, no matter how small, bothers them.
Rust’s words echo a quote from Kurt Vonnegut’s novel ‘Mother night’, 1961: “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.“

Osgood, I'm gonna level with you, we can't get married at all. Why not? Well, in the first place, I'm not a natural blonde. Doesn't matter. I smoke! I smoke all the time. I don't care. Well, I have a terrible past, for three years now, I've been living with a saxophone player. I forgive you. I can never have children. We can adopt some.
