how people look at me when i say my favorite book is āflippedā (a romance book for middle schoolers) but they donāt understand how beautifully it tackles family dynamics and class differences and the struggle of realizing your parents who youāve idolized your whole life are assholes and youāve inherited their hatred. and how hard it can be to change and to look inside yourself and come to the conclusion you donāt like what there. and how forgiveness is important because people make mistakes and itās never to late to be better. but also how even the best parents can fuck up and arenāt perfect and even nice people can be judgmental and unforgiving.
yes bryce was a coward! he was a dick! but thatās the POINT!! heās trying to be better!!! heās unlearning his fathers hatred!!! he was THIRTEEN!!! and he wanted his father to be proud of him so he did and believed everything he did, but in the end he realized he didnāt want to be like his father!!!! because his father was miserable and cruel and not just to the Bakers but to Bryceās mother and sister and Bryce!!!! and honestly, you can see (especially in the book) that he ALWAYS liked and admired juli. even when he hated her, he would feel bad for her and want to help her but he was too afraid. he was afraid of what people thought and because his father hated the Bakers and thought they were trash, he thought him liking Juli would mean there was something wrong with him. that he was less than. but in the end he stopped caring about what other people thought and admitted to himself that he liked Juli and there was nothing wrong with that or her and thatās NOT EASY TO DO!!! HE WAS A CHILD!!!!
we must allow people to grow!!! especially young people!!!! Also your partner is himself but also completely different in ways you donāt understand, in ways that are sometimes scary because all that time in space changes a person.
I donāt know how anyone would react to that, cus damn thatās overwhelming, but I think thatās an interesting dynamic to have with an alien. Your partnerās closet companion besides you is an alien. It feels like the alien knows your partner better than you do some days. The alien also helped save your entire planet.
