I have a lot of pet peeves but I think the biggest one is when people say things like âoh itâs such a small town, only 35,000 peopleâ like bitch my town has 200 people, you need to pick a new adjectiveÂ
According to Wikipedia, a small town is 1,000-20,000 people. So although you are correct in stating that 35,000 people is not a small town (it is a large town), you are incorrect in thinking that you live in a town. You live in a village. You are a villager.
IâŚâŚ donât know what to do with that informationâŚâŚa villagerâŚ

Now that I've fully processed my reaction, I suppose I should say that The Greatest Showman really is very well-made. The repeated audio and visual elements pull it together (ex: silhouettes dancing during "A Million Dreams" and "Tightrope"). The music is stunning. It's art.
There are fantastic themes involving family, accepting people who are different, accepting yourself, and breaking unjust social standards.
But it makes me feel things I don't want to feel. And because I don't want to feel those thingsârejection, betrayal, embarrassment, angerâI get even more angry. See, with stories like these, I either (1) feel the negative parts very deeply, perhaps more deeply than most moviegoers, or (2) don't feel at all and I get bored. In this case, the music blasts past my defenses, so boredom isn't an option.
Even the music itself overwhelms me, especially at the volume we had the TV. I think I'd do better watching the musical scenes on my own, on my computer, with my headphonesâable to fully enjoy the music and visuals on my terms.
There was little to stimulate my mind, no mystery or suspense, limited action... So, in sum, it pummeled me with emotions and sensations, and it gave me very little of the stuff I enjoy most in movies.
I respect The Greatest Showman and everyone behind it. It's a wonderful film. I understand why so many people love it. At the same time, I haven't had this negative a reaction to anything I've watched in a very long time. It is not for me.
(This is mostly a follow-up to my Facebook and Twitter mini-rants, but also kinda to this post.)
What image are you displaying in front of the public? Are you doing an act? for what show? Well it doesnât matter, These cameras donât capture us. đđś
When a drama/romance movie manages to get past my defenses and stir up emotional reactions...
Movie: Happiness, even though bad things will obviously happen.
Me: Okay, fine. I'll play.
Movie: So the MC did this avoidable thing, and he hurt people he cared about in the process. Cue bad stuff, which you predicted right after he started making his first dumb choice.
Me: For heaven's sake, what a FOOL. Excuse me, too annoyed to watch.
Movie: Time to be positive again! Happy ending!
Me: I mean, what kind of fool actually does that? Don't tell meâabout a quarter of humans. But still. Why was that necessary?
Movie: Um... look. They're smiling. It's been patched up for literally ten whole minutes. It's all good now. Better than in the beginning, even.
Me: If he'd just had his priorities straight and listened to his wife for once, they'd never have gotten in that mess!
Movie: Look. Smiles. And happy end credit music.
Me: For Pete's sake, why do I have to watch people behave insensibly on the screen? Don't I get enough of it in social media and other RL sources?
is this what growing up is like
me at 14: wow, protagonists in media my age! how relateable!
me at 28: WHY ARE THERE SO MANY CHILD SOLDIERS? WHERE ARE ALL THE ADULTS? WHO LET THIS HAPPEN AND WHY ARE THEY NOT BEING PROSECUTED BY LAW WITHIN THESE FICTIONAL UNIVERSES
In the same vein:
Me at 14: oh protagonists that are 17-20-ish, theyâre basically adults, right?
Me at 28: Oh my Gods youâre babies who left you in charge?!
Ariel: Daddy, I love him! Me at 14: Yeah, girl, you tell him! Me at 30:
the best

Fun fact: Tenochtitlan fell in 1521. From 1603 onwards, large numbers of honest-to-god fricking Japanese Samurai came to Mexico from Japan to work as guardsmen and mercenaries.Â
Ergo, it would be 100% historically accurate to write a story starring a quartet consisting of the child or grandchild of Aztec Noblemen, an escaped African slave, a Spanish Jew fleeing the Inquisition (which was relaxed in Mexico in 1606, for a time) and a Katana-wielding Samurai in Colonial Mexico.
