Writing challenge Day 2 Lucky/Heartache
Light fluttered across her vision as the sun peeked in through her windows, waking its golden priestess. Out of habit she reached for him, years of being alone in her bed. She still craved the warmth of his body next to her own. A nameless soul, just the affection of another, a huge desire that she could not seem to chase out of her chest.
Sylrissa knew what heartache was, for she loved with all of her well-being and often gave that love to those who felt little to nothing at all. The empty bed gave her pause for a moment. The lady tried to blink away the dreams of the night to embrace the honesty of the day.
Sylrissa felt she was a lucky one, the wise one even, while the other chased the fantasy of power. She had the sweetness of motherhood. Two blessings of joy that kept her on the straight and narrow.
As she rose up from her sheets, eyes peeked in the door. Lily was barely a teenager now but almost her mother’s height of six feet. Taller than some of her teachers but full of grace and kindness. Braedan would be starting elementary school come fall and was bound to become the headache of the teachers.
“Do you two not know how to sleep in?” Sylrissa laughed as she trudged herself across the floor.
“I did my best to keep him busy, but you promised snow and Braedan will not stop going on about it.” Lily let herself into the room, helping herself to her mother’s vanity set.
“Oh, Braedan is the only one excited about our vacation to Winterspring, is he?” Sylrissa teased as she scooped up her midnight-haired son. His face was dirty from cinnamon rolls, giving away that the cook had already fed the kids.
Lily rolled her blue eyes, Sylrissa catching the expression in the reflection of her vanity mirror.
“Strawberry is going too,” Braedan warned his mother, having already tried to sneak his pet bunny once into the luggage.
Sylrissa gave a playful sigh. “Both of you out. I need to dress, then we will go. Strawberry too. Lily, put down that lipstick, it is far too dark for you.”
The children were chased out, lipstick taken back. Sunlight warmed her room as she started to get ready for their trip away from home.
“Oh mom! You got mail too, from Aunt Mae. I know I wasn’t supposed to open it, but she sent you a red dress…” Lily called from the other side of the door, waiting impatiently on her mother.
In her brief moment of confusion as to why Maeskia would even send a gift, Sylrissa just shook her head. That would be an issue when she returned. The children and her deserved a long holiday. Just the three of them. And Strawberry, of course.
