La Bomba is showcasing the art of local Long Beach artist David Van Patten. DVP's work, which ranges from drawing and painting to paper-cut outs, invites us to investigate the absurdity of human existence, evoking the surrealist psyche of contemporary society. In his work, he creates dream-like conglomerates, playfully fusing everyday objects with human, animal and architectural forms. Other times his visions pronounce dark and cryptic scenes of impossible juxtapositions and bizarre human interactions offering twisted tones of social commentary. His illustrative style, with clean-lines and stark clarity, mocks the viewers attempt to enjoy a simple light-hearted image. At a glance, these seemingly straightforward forms and faces quickly morph as you slide away from the mundane into a slippery sub-conscious realm.
