Once a year, students board a bus at dawn, bundle up in parkas, and hit the slopes at Mountain High Resort in the San Gabriel Mountains. By afternoon, that same busload of students trades snow gear for swimsuits and heads to a Southern California beach for a seaside cookout. Skiing and swimming: same day, same students. 🎿🌊
The tradition dates all the way back to 1891, when Pomona started an annual mountain picnic. It shifted toward winter sports in the 1920s, swapped to the beach during a low-snow stretch in the 1940s, and eventually combined both into one epic day.
Only in SoCal can you carve turns in the morning and catch waves by sunset. ❄️➡️☀️
