I think people often underestimate the potential educational value of senseless memes. For example, thanks to Spiders Georg, literally every teenager on Tumblr has a reasonable grasp of what a statistical outlier is and the sorts of problems that outliers can introduce into a naïve analysis. There are grown adults who don’t get that - I deal with them on a daily basis.

At work, in this new role, I stopped writing "I think [x]." I only write "I suggest [x]" or "I recommend [x]."

Part of that is because I'm angling for a role I made up called Director of Advisory Services, which is all about telling clients what they should be doing differently. I'm intentionally positioning myself as someone who Suggests and Advises and Recommends things.

But also, being a woman working on technical things with a bunch of guys, I've gotten pushed-around in the past for not advocating strongly enough. Not anymore! I am the boss* and what I say goes!

*I am not the boss of anyone, but I am often the defacto leader on projects, so I have to Command Authority.

I've built a reputation in my industry and people value my opinion and advice! I'm great at getting a bunch of people to agree on something! I don't allow people to run my meetings because I'm in charge!

It's what I've been looking for during the past 20 years of being in corporate.

One of my projects had a really tight deadline and it was possible to meet the deadline, but it required everything to go right.

The key stakeholder on the client side just had a meeting with me to say, "Is it OK if we push the deadline out by a month? We won't be ready on time." YES, bud, that is just fine! We can accommodate that on our end.

The PM and I were messaging on the side, trying not to get too excited in front of the client. But it's a huge relief to me! We will still be working very hard as if we were trying to meet the original deadline, but we know that some things will get delayed and everyone is OK with that.
