“New Year’s Day” is the kind of song I’ve been waiting for for years. It’s beautiful and simple. The hard-earned optimism and strength of love bursting through it (and throughout reputation) are amazing. It made me immediately think of someone who was in my life recently and then couldn’t be anymore. I like that it ends the album because it’s about all I can take emotionally.
I also feel equally validated and frustrated that last month I started writing a song inspired by and which opens with a lyric about a stranger’s laugh. I’m not saying that if I release it anyone would accuse me of ripping off TS. I just need to put that out there. I was out somewhere eating dinner alone on a Friday, and I heard a girl laughing at a nearby table. It sounded just like the girl who told me she couldn’t pursue what we had any longer just four days earlier.
I can tell that it’s gonna be a long road.
