I would read a book about Griffin, Anthony, Sterling Jones and Evie Brooke
saying Babel lacks nuance is absolutely ABSURD. there are strong anti-colonial themes in the book but that's not its primary message, believe it or not.
the title is literally "Babel: or the necessity of violence" THAT IS THE MAIN THEME OF THE BOOK. THE NECESSITY OF VIOLENCE
the story centers on Robin, who grapples with complex internal struggles as a person of color, essentially kidnapped by the British to study and serve the British Empire, despite being originally from China. it's about his ongoing internal moral debate on whether to continue serving the empire or to oppose it.
the book doesn't ask, "Is colonialism bad?" because the answer is obvious: OF COURSE IT IS. That's why R.F. Kuang doesn't give it nuanceāit doesn't deserve it.
it seems that those who dislike the book are just offended by its blatant anti-colonial stance and if that's the case, you need to seriously reevaluate your perspectives.

she used it time and time again without permission. she used it while ignoring all protests because she sees language as a tool to use, a weapon to wield. all to get ahead. lettyās another cog in the apparatus of white colonialism, exploiting that which doesnāt belong to her.
letty couldn't handle the fact a brown man rejected her, but also couldn't handle knowing that ramy would pick robin over and over again, that he would rather have a (chinese) MAN over a (white) woman
she tried to connect with him the ways robin could, by talking abt his foreign land, by "appreciating" him ("but your skin is lovelyā"), mimicking his banter with robin (constantly going against every mundane opinion he had in an effort to tease him) but she could never see how she was constantly hurting him by never listening to him, by putting down his feelings of britain's settlement in india, by her utter ignorance to the group's collective experiences

robin and ramy did not have enough time in this world together. there was so much unsaid. they shouldāve had a LIFETIME together.. GOD .
I want to be something intangible, like Berck-Plage, a place Sylvia Plath described in her poem of the same name. Or perhaps the priest she described within the stanzas. Or the corpse she mentioned in the sixth part, a central motif to the piece, described so vividly yet abstract to the movie painted by the poet's voice.
I want to be how Plath chose her words. Did she recite each line out loud before settling on a word, or did she write globs of choices and peel them away to reveal a set of seeds that fit each other like puzzles in a box? What does it take for a person to turn into poetry? What does it take for an artist to stare at an artwork so hard they wish they never knew how to paint in the first place?
I wonder if this was how painters back then reviewed their peers' works, full of envy bubbling in their stomachs, seeping and crawling up their throats, only to cascade out of their mouths as bitter, cynical, educated criticisms. The shape of those words feels solid on paper, as if they were objective. But I learned, as I felt the poet's voice tickle my ear long before it was gone, that it is not education that prompts an artist to critique an art so full of feelings. It is envy.
Envy of the highest kind. The same one that turned gods against each other.
Oh, how great a poet must you be for a person to feel not the emotion you evokedābut divine jealousy.
