Kill The Boy Band Book Review
Review of âKill The Boy Bandâ by Goldy Moldavsky
Overall: 4.5 stars
This definitely falls into the âdark humorâ category and requires some (ok a lot) of suspension of disbelief. But once you start reading this book the whiplash plot will suck you right in. The story is killer (har har bad pun) and the characters are razor sharp. I have to admit that I was mostly drawn in by the cover and the concept. Then when I started reading I sped through the entire thing fueled entirely by the burning desire to know what happened next. But apart from being an overall fun read what really got to me about this book were the observations and questions about human nature that were part of the ongoing narrative in a very seamless and yet thought-provoking way. As a fangirl myself, I have spent a lot of time pondering just what it is that fuels passions and flame wars in various fandoms on the internet and in real life. What makes people so dedicated to their idols? And is this necessarily a good/healthy thing or not? I think it can be a bit of both and depend on the amount of separation you have from fandom. I feel like the main character was completely relatable in showing how a fandom can draw you in and offer support during a time of intense personal upheaval and need. It can fill a void and help you get through trauma, but often times other people are left staring at you like âhuh.â It sounds stupid to admit this but for me the Twilight series and the Jonas Brothers were there for me during probably the darkest time of my life. I experienced PTSD from sexual assault and those two fandoms were what gave me hope - they even prevented me from committing suicide and basically gave me a reason to go on. But the question is what happens when fandom is taken too far. Thereâs an infamous incident that comes to mind of the âflying fangirlâ of Supernatural convention fame. I think overall the author handled the sensitive boundaries of fandom in a fair and just manner. I enjoyed the satire and lambasting and will be mulling over several key passages/quotes for awhile and thinking about what I happened after the last page was over - always the sign of a good read! Here are a few of my favorites: âThe joy you find as a teen, however frivolous and dumb, is pure, and meaningful. It doesnât matter that it might ferment and taste different when youâre older. Thatâs the whole point of being a teenager- not worrying about the future.â âOther people may have seen fangirls as crazy teenage girls obsessed with a fad, but they couldnât understand the small but important joy you can get from indulging in these fandoms. They didnât understand that a new gif of Rupert K. grinning at you could be the difference between a crap day and a beautiful one. They didnât get the friendships that formed, the community of people who shared in your same joy⌠And when you find something that makes you happy and giddy and excited every day, us fangirls know a truth that everyone else seems to have forgotten: You hold on to that joy tenaciously, for as long as you can. Because itâs rare to get excited about anything these days. Ask your parents.â âThe glass doors opened and everyone was screaming, despair that their favorite boys were being taken away or happiness that they were finally getting to see them. It was impossible to tell the difference.â I would recommend this book to anyone who spends a lot of time on Wattpad reading fanfic about Justin Bieber being a secret serial killer or those who were crushed by Zayn leaving One Direction. Also for those who like Pretty Little Liars and No One Else Can Have You by Kathleen Hale. And for you reading pleasure âWhy Must We Hate the Things Teenage Girls Loveâ by Laura Moss: http://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/arts-culture/stories/why-do-we-hate-things-teen-girls-love
aro ace culture is wanting someone to understand you so badly that it almost looks like a crush from the outside, but really you just want to be known.
