I think people who consider aromanticism as "basically straight" underestimate how noticeable absence can be to those around you.

Whether you're a kid in school with classmates who won't take "no one" as an answer to who you have a crush on or an adult whose coworkers have picked up on the fact that you've never mentioned a romantic partner; after enough time, a lack or insufficient amount of romantic interest will raise the antennae of friends, family, coworkers, etc... They will notice and they will speculate and they will ask.

It is impossible to meet the societal bar for straightness through inaction.

#I've explained my identity too everyone in my life multiple times (admittedly without actually using the term aroace) and EVERYONE I still-#convinced I'm a lesbian or bi or something and eventually I will fall in love #all of them #even my friends in the community keep making jokes about me secretly liking girls and that's why I'm not in a relationship #my mom once said “no there's people like that they're called ace that's the one I don't want you to be!!!” when I was explaining how I'm-#just not interested in romance and that stuck with me since #since I don't use the label irl nobody has outright refused to accept my identity but ik they don't understand and a label won't change that #they'll just stop saying stuff out loud

what’s the point of giving your character severe trauma if it doesn’t make them an asshole to work with. not in a cute way. they should be a fucking cunt. they have to make problems on purpose. they have to lash out at their friends without even being provoked, just because they’re having a bad day and they want to hurt someone to cope with it. on purpose. they have to want to hurt someone on purpose. they can regret it later, but they can’t just say something mean on accident, it has to be calculated and cruel and so, so intentional.
