I ship a new ship that is controversial, but for no reason (it's just a legal age gap ship) and Tumblr and Ao3 are the only safe space I found to talk about this ship. Everywhere on tiktok and Instagram people call this ship disgusting. And I'm torn between defending the ship and trying to make people understand why they should let us ship freely or just trying to not interact with anyone outside of Tumblr and ao3.

I'm very lost, because I feel like I'm not doing "enough" because I truly think we should be able to ship anyone we want without getting harassed for it, and I want to express that, but at the same time I don't want to be bullied online, even if I'm on a private account.

What do you think ? Should I try to defend my ship on other social media ? Or it doesn't matter anyway ?

you don’t have to go out of your way and confront them. you can express how you feel on your blog/account. but it’s not your job or responsibility to defend a fictional ship even if you believe what you’re defending (the freedom to enjoy fiction however we want without being harassed for it) is more important than the ship. because chances are that it will just turn into an argument, and you may expose yourself to harassment. which is not worth it if you ask me.

the personal trick that I use in order to maintain my peace of mind when I’m in fandom space, or when I’m just on the internet in general, is that I curate my internet experience and ignore anything I don’t agree with / anything that upsets me.

fandom experience should be first and foremost what brings you comfort and joy. not online arguments with strangers.
