How many children did Dionysus and Ariadne end up having?: A chronology
Homeric epics (Iliad+Odyssey): Dionysus and Ariadne are linked, but only because he inexplicably kills her. No children mentioned
Hesiod’s Theogony + fragments: No children mentioned in the Theogony proper. The Catalogue of Women has a fragment that says “she bore a son, Thoas”; though we don’t know who “she” is, it’s safe to say it’s Ariadne since no other mother is ever attributed to Thoas.
Iliad scholia (I couldn’t find this text anywhere, so we’re trusting Wikipedia here): Enyeus
Anacreon (poet, 573-495 B.C): Oinopion
Attic amphora (575-525 B.C): Unnamed twins
Apollonius Rhodius’ Argonautica (250-238 B.C): Thoas (who has a daughter of his own, Hypsipyle)
Scholia for Apollonius’ Argonautica (I couldn’t find a date, so I’ll place it here): Oenopion, Thoas, Staphylus, Latromis, Euanthes, and Tauropolis
Apollodorus’ Bibliotheca (2nd century A.D): Thoas, Staphylos, Oinopion, and Peparethos [Bonus: In the section on the Argonautica, Apollodorus lists “Phanus and Staphylus, sons of Dionysus” among the heroes. Their mother is not stated; however, given that in this same book the author states that Ariadne is the mother of Staphylus, we can sensibly infer that Phanus is her son too]
Theophilus of Antioch, Ad Autolycum (168-182 A.D, Christian slander): Thoas, Staphylus, Eunous, and Maron [Maybe Thestius? No website mentions him but he is part of the list, am I misunderstanding something?]
Pausanias, Description of Greece (2nd century A.D): “The district of the Cerameicus has its name from the hero Ceramus, he too being the reputed son of Dionysus and Ariadne.”
Hyginus’ Fabulae (2nd century A.D): Phliasus and Eurymedon
Bonus, again: There’s a fragment from a lost Euripides play that mentions Thysa, daughter of Dionysus. No mother is mentioned, but is it a stretch to imagine that Dionysus’ usual consort would be the mother?
● To the best of my knowledge, if you combine all of the different accounts, you get a total of 14 children: Thoas, Oenopion, Staphylus, Enyeus, Latromis, Euanthes, Tauropolis, Peparethus, Phanus, Phliasus, Eurymedon, Ceramus, Maron and Eunous. [Plus Thestius and Thysa in grey territory]
