So I’ll say it again: it is okay if you come to tumblr to escape upsetting news. It is okay if you’re just here for fun and fandom. It is okay if you do not want to use your tumblr as a place to read about or spread the current events that are circulating. It is okay if you need a place to decompress and just relax. There are other ways to be involved in/support causes and you are allowed to set boundaries on social media platforms without it being indicative of your belief systems.

Do y’all think the point of this post is that I think capitalism has no effect whatsoever on my disorder? Is that seriously what you’re getting out of it? Do you think it’s so impossible that there might—possibly—be a point of view in between “capitalism has no effect on ADHD” and the reductive, simplistic point of view I was critiquing, which is that ADHD has no inherent negative qualities and all of our symptoms would just stop being a problem if we got rid of capitalism?

It doesn’t matter to y’all what I’m trying to express, though, does it? You just see something that might be construed as criticizing your favorite ideology and stop seeing me as a person. It doesn’t matter that I wasn’t actually criticizing communism or anti-capitalism and that it’s really beside the point. I’ve had to block about a dozen people in the past day or two because I was seeing more of these same angry, nasty, belittling replies every single time I opened my notifications. There have been so fucking many and they’ve been all so consistently nasty. I’ve had to turn off asks on my blog because I was getting suicide bait.

What I don’t get is that even in the very worst interpretation of this post, at worst I’m being sort of negative toward an anti-capitalist point of view. The worst way I can think of to misconstrue my point doesn’t even attack a person or an identity. No, the horrible thing I did in this post was say something potentially adjacent to criticizing an IDEOLOGY.

All I’ve gained from all the misery of having posted this is the lingering question of what it is about y’all’s point of view that makes you so profoundly misanthropic and devoid of basic civility toward people. Like I genuinely thought the point of anti-capitalism was that the world as we know it is hostile toward human beings and we need to create a more compassionate world. I thought that was what attracted people to it in the first place. That was my understanding.

But this has been genuinely the most bafflingly miserable set of online interactions I’ve ever been in. Not even arguing with antivaxxers or young-earth creationists is this fucking horrible. At least usually there’s just a couple assholes instead of dozens of them. I had a friend basically call me ignorant one time for not believing that the government was using chemtrails to kill republicans and that was better than this.
