My stomach tightened when I read that they had hooked up twice. For a moment, jealousy rose sharply. Then I reminded myself: she had not deceived me, broken a rule, or hidden the truth. The feeling was real, but it was not evidence of betrayal. In fact, she was looping me in to her experience while trusting and hoping I would stay lovingly connected to her rather than caught up in my worries.

I replied, “Thank you for asking before doing anything else love. I’m still comfortable, but I’d like you home afterward to reconnect” The conversation required no accusation because no one had done anything wrong.

The coffee detail affected me more than I expected. Instead of shaming her for sharing it, I said, “I want you to enjoy your coffee but I never knew that would snag me. Not your fault. But that part feels intimate to me. Feels like a thing you and I just do. No shame though, just something to connect on when you get home.” She agreed without becoming defensive. She asked whether I was truly okay with one more time. I could tell she was not asking me to perform enthusiasm and force a yes. She was giving me the dignity of informed consent. My first impulse was to answer yes immediately so I would seem secure and confident. Instead, I paused and wrote, “I need a few minutes to check how I actually feel.” She respected the pause, and trust deepened. I thought about it. And said, what I truly felt:

“I want you to have fun, but I'm hungry to reconnect with you, can you hookup with him and then leave quickly? I would want to hookup with you ASAP rather than waiting hours after, if he wants to talk your ear off lol.” She texted back: "You got it love. You're my priority. I trust what you're saying is okay, and I'll tell him beforehand that I have to hurry home once we are done. See you soon, and I have my phone on do-not-disturb but your calls are of course approved to come through. See you soon with plenty to share."
