One time I was at a pub trivia night with some writer friends and we almost won but there was a tie. As a tiebreaker they asked us and the other team to write down as many moons of Jupiter as we could in two minutes.
None of us are very into astronomy so at first everyone was like oh we’re gonna lose but there were three of us at the table that night who were either former classics majors or otherwise super well read on Roman mythology and the three of us were like give us that paper right now and we just took turns writing down all of the lovers of Jupiter from mythology that we could.
So of course we won lol
You really never know what random niche knowledge you have will come in handy at trivia night. You really don’t.
My sister was in some upper level math class and the last question on the final was an extra credit question worth 5 points. It was some truly heinous equation to solve in order to complete a phrase. “Remember, remember the ____ of November”
As a math student she was abysmal squeaking by with a C by doing every extra credit assignment in the books so she needed all the points she could get. But as humanities student she happened to just know the poem it was referencing, the answer being the 5th of November.
Now she had two choices: attempt to reverse engineer the equation from the solution to show her work or leave it blank. If she showed incorrect work she knew she’d be docked points or given no points for merely stumbling upon the correct answer in the wrongest way possible but if she had the correct answer and didn’t show her work she’d only lose a point.
She opted to not show her work and instead wrote a short note stating she’d read the poem and knew without a doubt the answer was 5 and to prove it wrote out the next two lines.
Got full points for “possession of cross-disciplinary knowledge” and an extra point since as he put it she’d still “shown her work”
And while she by no means passed that test with flying colors she was the only one to get the extra credit question right.

I know I already made a post to this effect but it's so baffling to me when someone defends the fact that headphone jacks are slowly but surely getting phased out by smartphone manufacturers with some variations of "wireless headphones are more convenient anyway" bc like. If we're talking about convenience what I like about wired headphones is that they conveniently have a single plug that makes the same damn pair of headphones universally compatible with every single audio-output-capable device I own, from my phone and my computer to my fucking gameboy and my casette player, it doesn't get any more convenient than that.

I just saw a video title on YouTube that said something like “Why is glass transparent?” And that’s an interesting question and I’m sure it’s great that the video exists but my first thought was like “Because glass is terrible, obviously.” Because it’s unwieldy and let’s out warmth and needs to be heated to hundreds of degrees to be shaped and turns into hundreds of tiny daggers if you drop it. Why the hell would we bother with that if it didn’t have some magical quality like being totally transparent despite being solid? Glass is transparent because if it weren’t, we’d use something else.

If you’re still curious we did not start working glass for its transparency. It was most likely started as a sanitary concern. Glass is easy to clean with soap and water, once it’s cleaned out you can use it again for anything and no germs or flavor from the previous meal or drink will remain.
Other materials at the time, namely clay, would absorb flavors and germs meaning that if you ate beef off a clay plate your next meal with that plate could have beef flavor and microbes common on cow meat on it. That would leak out seemingly at random no less. Heck imagine a sick person coughing into their soup bowl and then months later their germs hiding in the clay would pop out to infect whole new people.
Also the earliest human use of glass we know of is for its sharpness. Pre-historic people would use volcanic glass as sharp knives for food preparation. Also beads. Pretty much any new substance humans get their hands on for most of our history we immediately try to make into beads.
The fact that it could become see through was a side benefit.
