i have mixed feelings on the thought that hotd is specifically and solidly an anti-war narrative but cannot express myself properly right now. must ponder on this further in the meantime

this is still not a real expansion on the thought but i’m seeing more of these takes the closer we get to the finale and i just really think there’s more to an anti-war narrative than expressing “war is really hard on people” or “no one wants to be there” - 1) asoiaf expresses how war will ravage land and people but this doesn’t make it an exclusive anti-war narrative to me either, not when so many of our central characters rely on war to achieve their goals (and these are goals we as readers WANT to see them achieve) 2) there are several characters in hotd that do want to be there. actually. sure we have some who have no interest in this mode of violence but this doesn’t erase the ones who do want it. i don’t buy into the idea that secretly deep down all of the characters don’t want to be a part of this story. they do! that’s why we’re here! if asoiaf or any related story cared about pushing this narrative i think we’d have main characters who aren’t major political actors who are responsible for getting us to this war in the first place
