She's always based her worth on how useful she is to other people. From the very first episode Xander is asking her to tutor him. He continues to do so. And yeah, she's smart, but when even your best friend is doing that it kinda says more than just what's on screen. Her first conversation with Buffy is Buffy asking her for academic help. Later, when Buffy finds her at the Bronze, Willow is shocked Buffy is talking to her because to Willow, there's no reason for her to! She keeps insisting Buffy can go and doesn't have to come back.

That carries through the whole show. The reason Willow got into magic was because she wanted to use it to help Buffy. She was so hurt about Buffy going to LA because she'd done a major spell, thought she'd failed, and that Buffy had left for months without telling her BECAUSE of that. Yeah, rationally she knew there were other factors but deep down she felt like she'd failed. That's why it takes time for her to come around, she thinks Buffy left because Willow wasn't useful enough to her.

This conversation just confirms that. She thinks she needs the magic because it's something Buffy has a need for. Her research was great but as soon as Kendra and Faith showed up she knew the research wasn't going to be enough.
