If Forgeries are Hung Long Enough in the Museum, They Become Real*
A big part of my job is paying attention to the discourse and lately, and by lately I mean "for the past several years, up to a decade ago, definitely since 2022-ish, but really over the last month" the talk of the town has been weird. And all signs point it only getting way super duper weirder from here.
Some recent evidence, in bullet form:
Pope Leo XIV, yes that guy, released his first encyclicalāa formal letter to all Catholic bishops around the world, and therefore all 1.5 billion Catholicsāand it was about AI. The last papal encyclical, by Pope Francis, was on "the human and divine love of the heart of Jesus Christ." Not AI. Pope Leo's encyclical, "Magnifica humanitas," is specifically about "safeguarding the humanĀ personĀ in the age ofĀ artificial intelligence." One Anthropic's co-founders spoke alongside the Pope when the encyclical was released.
Late May rung to the sounds of graduating undergraduates booing commencement speeches extolling the virtues of AI, including a speech by ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Then, just before the end of the month, Matteo Wong (whose work I like very much) wrote a story for The Atlantic about how AI detection tools like Pangram could lead to mistakes and accusations that "could very quickly spiral into a witch hunt."
Related: this cranky LinkedIn post from the editor of City AM, decrying AI slop. "We will never be a dumping ground for your AI slop," quoth Christian May.
Then today, as the sort of cherry on top, UPenn's Ethan Mollick, a supreme AI Knower and Booster if there ever was one, published his take on Claude 5 Fable, the "Mythos-class" model that Anthropic just released. The model is so good that it "suggests our relationship with AI is changing in drastic ways," writes Mollick. To wit: "I can still steer Fable, and it follows instructions remarkably well: the more ambitious the instruction, the better the result. But steering is no longer the same as doing. I brief the model, it spins up its own agents to research and write and check one anotherās work, and what comes back is finished. A patron commissions a single artist. Fable is closer to a whole studio, where I am the client who signs off on the final work without ever setting foot on the floor."
All in all, weird stuff. The singularity approaches? If it does, how will the people react?

I recently wrapped up my most recent Hugo House class, and we looked at Shield's The Thing About Life is That One Day You'll Be Dead, which led me to reread RH. A book that "argues that our culture is obsessed with āreality,ā precisely because we experience hardly any" felt like the right book for the moment.
