The relic was a miracle. It's easy to get caught up in the frustration and grief of being overwritten, of slowly dying. It's easy to forget the reality that V died in that motel. If the relic had not been in their head, that would've been the end of their story. The relic, and Johnny, gave V something that most people plead for and never get - more time. Of course their impending death still hurts, of course they will rage against the dying of the light. They only have that chance to fight because of the relic. Because of Johnny. Even if they can't be cured, even if there is no happy ending, V got more time. Time to be with friends, time to fall in love, time to make an impact. Time to be someone that would be remembered. In the end, that was all they ever wanted. The entire game is the story of V's dream coming true, even if they don't always realize that.
