My amazing grandma is ~40% native, being white, a while back I told her that it felt odd to call myself native in public even though the rest of my white family never helped raise me. She told me the focus on percentage is a colonizer mindset which taken to its conclusion, will mean we will be "breeded out," as the original colonizers would want and she told me that native people need to stop relying on percentage. Its a problem in the tribe, the blood quantum systems used based on percentages has so many problems, like someone being 24% native from a specific tribe but unable to enroll because of a minimum requirement of 25% from that tribe despite being a higher total native percentage or despite being culturally involved.
