I think I was a splintered sunflower before you came along. The kind of sunflower that’s had every one of its yellow petals ripped off, stripped bare to its brown middle. And I know that’s hard to imagine, because who would do that to such a beautiful plant? ─ yet the one before you did. But you, you laughed when you stumbled upon me. “Hi there,” you greeted with a boyish smile. “Got yourself in a bit of bind, haven’t you?” I watched in wonder then, as you proceeded to take each one of my stranded petals and carefully stick them back on me. “There,” you said when you were finished, taking a step away to admire me. “The prettiest flower in the entire garden.” And that was it. I was in love.

1. Your skin may never be perfect, and that’s okay. 2. Life is too short not to have the underwear, the coffee, and the haircut you want. 3. Everyone (including your family, your coworkers, and your best friend) will talk about you behind your back, and you’ll talk about them too. It doesn’t mean you don’t love each other. 4. It’s okay to spend money on things that make you happy. 5. Sometimes without fault or reason, relationships deteriorate. It will happen when you’re six, it will happen when you’re sixty. That’s life.

I can’t give you the love you want. I can’t be yours. Not when I’ve spent my entire life protecting people from my edges and fell in love with the darkness. I can’t save you. And you finally have everything you wanted. Don’t throw that away for me. Because it’ll be a waste trying to love someone like me.
