so the FDA basically told raaw energy:

"hey, all of these samples of your pet food were dangerously contaminated, and at least one dog has gotten sick from it. you should issue a recall of these batches of your pet food."

and as is tradition for countless pet food companies (raw especially!) that pinky swear they give a fuck before being told this exact thing by the FDA, raaw energy said simply, "nah!"

raaw energy dog food evidently does not adequately test their pet food for safety and contamination before sale, nor do they issue timely recalls when presented with evidence their raw dog food is contaminated and has already done harm. raaw energy raw dog food, other dangerous pet food brands, should only be fed to dogs you want to poison, with owners you also want to poison.

chances are, more than just these batches are contaminated. these are just the contaminated batches that got caught. and they got caught AFTER at least one dog got hurt, and only because a human reported that dog's illness to the connecticut department of agriculture (CTDA). the new jersey department of agriculture and the US FDA also got involved and raaw energy still will not comply, how many more red flags do you need in a pet food company?

What do I need to do?

If you have any of the Raaw Energy dog food products listed above, stop feeding the product to your pets and throw it away in a secure container where other animals, including wildlife, cannot access it. If you no longer have the package or cannot read the date code, throw the food away.   Consumers who have had the recalled products in their homes should clean and disinfect all pet supplies, including all storage containers, bowls, utensils, food prep surfaces, pet bedding, litter boxes, toys, floors, and any other surfaces that the food or pet may have had contact with, including your refrigerator or freezer. Clean up the pet’s feces in places where people or other animals may become exposed. Consumers should thoroughly wash their hands after handling the product or cleaning up potentially contaminated items and surfaces. ...

Why is the FDA concerned about pathogenic bacteria in pet food? Pet foods contaminated with L. monocytogenes, Salmonella, pathogenic E. coli, or Campylobacter jejuni are of particular public health importance because they can affect both human and animal health. Pets can get sick from the bacteria and may also be carriers of the bacteria and pass it on to their human companions without appearing to be ill. The FDA is aware of cases in which humans and/or animals have gotten sick from exposure to pet foods contaminated with harmful bacteria or to pets that have eaten contaminated eaten contaminated pet food (Salmonella - human cases, Salmonella - kitten, Salmonella - kitten & dog, E. coli O157:H7 - human). Pets do not need to display symptoms of illness to pass bacteria on to their human companions. Infected pets can shed these bacteria in their feces and saliva, further contaminating the household environment, other animals, and sometimes, people.

To help prevent the spread of bacteria from infected pets to other animals or people, it is important to clean up feces immediately, to wash hands after touching the pet or its environment and avoid contact with the saliva of pets. 

some emphasis mine. pets who ate contaminated food can appear healthy and have no symptoms, while still being able to spread potentially deadly bacteria to other pets and humans. these bacteria are not eliminated by refrigeration or freezing.

and for the record, listeria can take up to three MONTHS after exposure to cause illness in humans.

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requires that all animal foods, like human foods, be safe to eat, produced under sanitary conditions, contain no harmful substances, and be truthfully labeled. Neither refrigeration nor freezing eliminates Salmonella, L. monocytogenes, E. coli O157, or Campylobacter jejuni.  

and by requires do you mean ask nicely or will there be real consequences? what consequences? because there sure have been a lot of advisories about pet food companies that refuse to issue recalls. darwin's natural pet products is still selling their raw pet food after over half a dozen recent FDA advisories about how they refuse to issue recalls despite selling dangerous contaminated pet food! including when a four year old human child was hospitalized for life-threatening kidney damage and required "extensive follow-up care" after being around a dog that had eaten darwin's naturals raw dog food.

How can I report a pet illness? People who think their pets have become ill after consuming contaminated pet food should first contact their veterinarians.   The FDA encourages consumers to report complaints about pet food products electronically through the Safety Reporting Portal. Additionally, consumers can visit the SmartHub – Safety Intake Portal – Report a Product Problem (fda.gov) to obtain electronic assistance with submitting a report.    

due to the extent of the contamination, there are some pretty long descriptions on the advisory of what these bacteria can do to human and pet health, and this post does not contain the entire contents of the advisory.

very long story short:

raaw energy dog food is contaminated and dangerous to the point it can harm, disable, and/or kill pets and humans. testing showed widespread contamination, but only after a dog's illness was officially reported. raaw energy has thus far refused to comply with the FDA and issue an adequate recall.

healthy dogs with zero symptoms after eating contaminated food can still make other animals and humans sick.

for pet concerns, contact the vet. for human concerns, contact a doctor. high risk patients are often prescribed preventative antibiotics after exposure but before symptoms. when it comes to listeria especially, which can take up to three months after exposure to cause illness, the earlier the treatment with antibiotics the less likely high risk patients become hospitalized, disabled, or dead.

ICE agents are cruising areas with immigrant-owned businesses, and kidnapping patrons and employees alike. Yesterday they abducted two US citizen employees at a suburban Target, one who was begging them to allow him to go get his passport to show them.

ICE is going door to door in immigrant-heavy neighborhoods, asking residents where their immigrant neighbors live. Read that again. If it sounds like something out of your high school history textbook, that’s because it is.

ICE is targeting schools and school buses. They pepper sprayed teenagers and abducted two school staff members at the high school up the street from me on Wednesday. Police are literally escorting school buses to ensure children can get to school and home safely. The Minneapolis Public Schools have moved to virtual learning for the next 4 weeks because it’s unsafe for children or teachers to physically come to school.

They are targeting hospitals and clinics. Patients are scared and are cancelling their appointments or just not showing up. Kids are missing their checkups and vaccines, folks aren’t getting their cancer care, etc.

They are smashing windows in cars and homes.

ICE is increasingly picking up Native Americans—again, targeting folks based on skin color alone.

They are arresting and beating legal observers. A friend of a friend had her arm broken yesterday. Folks are showing up at local hospitals, brought in in ICE custody, with severe injuries that are absolutely inconsistent with mechanism of injury reported by ICE. (Think: patient appears to have been beaten unconscious, while ICE agent says he slipped and fell.) I can’t emphasize enough that these ICE agents do not have warrants. There are 2,000+ agents here and they are simply hunting for anyone that’s not white. It doesn’t matter if you’re a citizen or a green card holder, they will kidnap you first and ask questions later. But the community is fighting back.

Protests are happening every day.

Community groups have been leading know-your-rights sessions for months, often to packed venues.

Whistles are being distributed by the thousands, carried on keychains and worn on coat zippers, always at the ready to be blown in warning if ICE is spotted.

Drivers are following ICE vehicles, blaring their horns in warning.

Businesses are locking their doors even while open to keep employees and customers safe. As I type this, I’m standing guard at the locked door of our neighborhood burrito joint while I wait for my takeout order, so the employees can focus on their jobs. The place is packed with neighbors supporting this small business.

Anti-ICE signs are posted everywhere. The community is making it crystal clear that ICE is not welcome here.

Parents and neighbors are standing guard outside schools, organizing carpools, and escorting kids to and from school on foot.

Parents of kids in Spanish-immersion daycare (there are a LOT of these daycares here!) are keeping their kids home so the teachers don’t have to take the risk of coming to work.

Churches and community groups are holding fundraisers to buy and deliver groceries to families who don’t feel safe leaving home.
