I make jokes about how horrifically bad the timing was in season 4, but I know the truth of it is heartbreaking. For three seasons before then if Jon had at any point gone to Martin and said “I love you, run away with me” Martin would have said yes. And then in season 4, if Martin had at any point come to Jon and said “I’ve changed my mind. I’m terrified but I want to run, I want to be with you” Jon would have said yes. They had so many opportunities to be together and be happy but they just. Missed them. They found some reason not to go for them or not to see them. Not that those reasons weren’t valid, but that doesn’t really make it better. 

And yes eventually they did finally take each others hands and run. They did get those weeks in Scotland when it was just a cabin, and scenery, and quiet, and each other. No horrors in the world could touch them for those weeks. They were happy for those weeks. A honeymooning couple, they could ignore all their worries, and it was wonderful 

But the point of a honeymoon is that it’s the start to a life together. The big celebration before you go back home and have to deal with all those worries and fear that come with life, but you’re secure in that knowledge that your partner will be there to guide you. And no, the apocalypse does not count. Their worries should of been who’s flat to move into or if they should just sell both and buy a new one. The fact that Jon’s taste in bed sheets is utterly abhorrent and Martin has objectively too many throw pillows. The horrifying discovery Jon makes that Martin has never made a meal that wasn’t pasta or tv dinners in his life. Whether or not they’re too broken for kids. That’s what they should have had, that’s what they should have worried about. 

But they’ll never get to go back home
