The Bhāgavata Purāṇa, a bhakti text compsed between c. seventh and ninth centuries CE, with love as its dominant theme, therefore remembers Rāma neither as an ideal king nor as the killer of Rāvaṇa, but as a great lover who, despite being so much free of greed that he could renounce his deserved royal wealth at once, chased an illusion of a golden deer to please his beloved’s whim:
“tyaktvā sudustyajya surairipsita rājyalakṣmī/ dharmiṣṭha āryabacasā yad agād araṇyam/ māyāmṛgaṃ dayitayepsitam anvadhāvan/ vande mahāpuruṣa te caraṇāravindam.” (I worship the lotus foot of that great man who went to the forest for the sake of the words of his righteous noble father, leaving the royal wealth coveted by even the deities and difficult to forsake, yet chased the magic deer desired by her beloved one.)
Ramayana is the story of that moon-like man and not of a Deity: Tagore on Rāmāyaṇa
Tagore engaged very closely with the Rāmakathā tradition – focused more on Rāma and Sītā and their poet. He opines that the glory of the Rāmāyaṇa is not in the battle of Rāma and Rāvaṇa. Rather, the battle is only a device to highlight the love of Rāma and Sītā.

Who were the Cārvākas?
🎯not materialists in the modern sense of the term ?
🎯Mīmāṃsā's tilt towards Lokāyata?
🎯apparently, most of them were Brahmins and cited vedic passages to defend their position (at least, based on the evidence gathered from older texts)
🎯depiction of the Cārvākas
🎯the reasons behind their fall from grace: locating them in the context of 6th century BCE (second phase of urbanisation in South Asia)
🎯rural traditionalists, urban cynics and the beginning of classical brahminism

बही होगी कविता अनजान।।

surely the first poet was in the throes of anguish; (his) sighs must have sprouted the songs. surging from the eyes in silence, unknowingly the poetry must have flown.
—Sumitranandan Pant (Tears)

you know back then they didn’t use to romanticize the past
The Indus civilization was the fourth culture in the world to become literate. Around 3400 BCE, the Sumerians of the Late Uruk culture in Mesopotamia created the very first writing system, which inspired the Proto-Elamites of Iran and the Egyptians to devise their respective scripts by about 3200 BCE. But whereas abundant textual material sheds light on the Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations, only very short Harappan inscriptions survive, written in signs that are extremely difficult to decipher in the absence of bilingual texts. The archaic Sumerian script and the earliest Egyptian hieroglyphic are understood (on the basis of their later forms) to a considerable extent, Proto-Elamite very poorly.

The history of the Panth shows an inclusive sect that defied divisions based on caste, religion and gender
28 November 2024
Now comes news from one of the biggest Hindi dailies that a case of impersonation and cheating under section 319 (1) of the penal code has been slapped against three Muslim men from the village of Atarsanwa in Ghazipur district. The SHO told the media that the men were singers and, dressed in saffron robes of jogis, had long been earning a living by singing Gorakhpanthi bhajans as they wandered from village to village. The men claimed to be Gorakhpanthi jogis, saying this was an ancestral vocation. But the villagers, led by a powerful BJP leader, were adamant that they could not be yogis or jogis, which most now claim is a Sanatani sect. The singers were caught and subjected to a “hard” quizzing, with the police being told that they were impersonators looking to make money by acting as Gorakhpanthi yogis. The three were then presented in the court of the SDM area, and have been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

According to the scholar Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, in time, as sectarian and political polarisation grew, some Hindu disciples tried to induct Hindu gods and goddesses into the pantheon of the sect that hitherto only worshipped Adi Nath (a form of Shiva). At that point, the Gorakhpanthis from lower castes opted for Islam, but continued to call themselves Nathpanthi jogis. Up until the 1921 census, there were 6,29,978 listed Hindu yogis, 31,158 Muslim jogis and 1,41,132 Hindu fakirs all associated with the Nath Panth.
Gorakhnath's inclusive legacy of promoting Muslim yogis is fading away, with many giving up their sarangi in the face of societal apathy and
