Kip Kinkel committed horrible crimes and im not going to downplay the pain he caused. However I do believe Kip Kinkel was failed by the system. He was 14 when he committed those crimes, an age in which the brain isn’t fully matured and doesn’t understand the severity of consequence for actions. He was a child when he killed and also was clearly mentally ill. Kip has schizophrenia and clearly had a warped view of reality, he was in a manic state and probably was experiencing psychosis. His confession shows how traumatized and disturbed he felt. He was subject to psychological and emotional abuse regularly as well as neglect on the part of his father. Kip Kinkel showed improvement after being put on medication and getting older and as far as I know is a model inmate. What Kip needed was rehabilitation and access to mental health services. I do believe he should have to serve time for his actions, but I think the better solution would have been a lighter sentence and admission to a mental facility. His lawyer should have helped him more, he was clearly not mentally competent when he commited his crime. I truly believe Kip Kinkel could have been rehabilitated and had a relatively normal life outside of prison. I know the pain and the grief he caused to the victims and the families was horrible. I know their lives will never be the same and that the hurt never truly goes away, but Kip was a victim as well, giving a child a 112 year sentence is not the solution.

At the time, she was attending the University of Tennessee. Christa, convinced that fellow classmate Colleen Slemmer was trying to ‘’steal’’ her boyfriend away from her, concocted a plan to kill her. On January 12, 1995, Christa, Tadaryl, and another friend signed out of the dormitory and lured Colleen to the woods, telling her that she wanted to make peace by offering her marijuana. Once they arrived at the designated location, Christa suddenly attacked Colleen. For the next thirty minutes, Colleen was beaten, slashed over 300 times, and a pentagram carved into her chest with a box cutter. Finally, Christa used a large chunk of asphalt paving to repeatedly smash Colleen’s head, killing her. Christa kept a piece of her victim’s skull as a trophy and began to show it off around the school. Within 36 hours, the three were arrested. The next year, Christa was sentenced to death by electrocution, while her boyfriend was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 2028.
