My favorite DnD character I have ever played is one of the usually most hated tropes - the Edgelord Rogue. On paper he should be utterly intolerable: he is selfish, impulsive, murderous, snarky and tends to immediately distrust or hate most NPC’s. Played the wrong way a character like this can make a campaign nearly intolerable, abandoning comrades and refusing to go along with GM plans.
But the beauty of my boy is that at his core (aside from his unquenchable desire for power) he wants to be Loved. He gloms on to those who show him kindness, and this has lead to him being brutally and insanely loyal to the party (particularly to our Wizard who he sees as a surrogate mother figure).
When left alone and to his own devices? He tends to make rather terrible decisions, which our GM fully knows and has exploited to create some truly diabolical plot situations. But he is also very aware of this, and so has come to rely on the party members to help steer him in the right direction. It has made him closer to the party because of it.
I created him because in the past I tend to have been so invested in prior characters that when they were broke by the narrative, it broke me a little, too. So I created a character to be unbreakable. My little edgelord is powered by Pure Spite and Vengeance and every indignity and setback is just more fuel to the fires that motivate him.
Additionally, and rather unexpectedly as well, I equally enjoy his little triumphs. His halting attempts to be better, to rise above his nature, inspired by his love for the party and their belief in him.
So I guess in conclusion I would say in DnD and other TTRPGs the important thing to remember is that at its core it is a collaborative game. You can play almost any kind of character you want, and even the most silly, tropey character can still be great, if you still bear in mind that you are playing WITH others.
