sounds silly but. one of the greatest things ever as someone with a trauma background is learning that things aren't inherently as bad or as scary as I thought. it IS possible to assemble Ikea furniture without arguments. is IS possible to discuss boundaries without having something thrown at me for speaking out of turn. it IS possible to spend hours on end sharing your favourite things with your favourite people, and not get called annoying for it. the world is an incredible place

It is possible to listen to someone's problem without it becoming your problem to fix. It is possible to have a difficult conversation without yelling or cursing. It is even possible to have arguments without bringing up the cruelest things you know about the person. It is possible to find people who give you credit for your merits instead of reducing you to your flaws. The world is indeed incredible.

In 2020 there were reports of people waiting in line for 9 hours to vote, because government officials closed polling places in majority Black areas to suppress their vote, and strangers who lived in other states started sending pizzas to the lines, which was kind of a sweet human moment. And those Republican officials responded by making it illegal to provide food and beverages to people waiting in line to vote. Then and now I'm just struck by the cruelty of it. That's all it was. Cruelty in the face of resilience from Black Americans. And of course, when it happened a lot of white northern liberals were distracted by the pizza part, and seemed to miss the underlying point, which is that absolutely no one should be in line to vote long enough to need meals delivered and the long lines were a problem those same officials created on purpose to keep Black people from voting. So in some ways I'm glad we moved on from that viral news moment, although I'm concerned that we've moved on from voter suppression too, that the people who aren't personally affected by it have forgotten that it's still a problem. But one of my cornier personality traits is how much I care about democracy, and I remember that moment for that reason.
