People are literally starving in South America because all the Quinoa crop is being exported mainly for white vegans who want to live “cruelty-free” but don’t care about brown people as much as they do about animals.

i would literally starve to death if i couldn’t eat cheese or meats because my body cannot process nuts as they are too rough on my intestines and cause inflammation

Plus there are vegan articles floating around decrying the use of honey, even though the production and harvest of honey by responsible beekeepers doesn’t hurt the bees at all and is not exploitative, and that misinformation hurts the honey industry, which is TRYING TO SAVE BEES FROM EXTINCTION.

Okay, but let’s actually talk about these points.  1. Veganism can be expensive. It can also be very affordable. It depends on where you live and what you’re eating. I live well below the poverty line, with a variable income, and I eat vegan for about $5 a day when I’m doing well financially. When I’m not, I eat vegan on $2 or $3 a day.  That said, being vegan on the cheap can be time consuming. I live in a small town with few vegan options in most stores. For that reason, and because it’s cheaper, I cook almost everything I eat from scratch. Because I work from home, this is an option for me. Another option might be weekly batch cooking/meal planning. I know multiple vegans who use that method successfully.  Not everyone lives in places where eating vegan safely and healthily is an easy or affordable option. Does that mean it can’t be done? Not at all. And there are lots of resources for working around constraints. Please feel free to direct questions to my inbox; if I don’t know the answer myself, I can find someone who does. 2. Veganism is, as the OP pointed out, actually *not* “cruelty free.” Cruelty free is a marketing gimmick. It doesn’t exist, because it is impossible to live in such a way that your life does not impact any others. You can take steps to reduce negative impact, including negative impact on other human beings, but those are conscious actions, some of them separate from not eating animal products. Veganism is not perfect.  That said, people who eat meat also eat vegetables and fruits and participate in the exploitation of migrant workers and impoverished farmers/growers. Whatever your diet, you should be aware of that and taking steps to do as little damage as possible. Eat local. Look for fair trade products. Know where your food (and everything else you buy) comes from and what’s involved in producing it.  Also note that the meat industry treats its employees terribly, and if we’re talking about exploitation that needs to be part of the discussion.  3. This is true. And to vegans, you don’t know someone else’s health situation. If they say that being vegan is/would be detrimental to their health, they know better than you do whether that’s true or not. Step off. 

1- White people think that way. But actually, being vegetarian is affordable. Vegan? Nope. Not at all. Try replacing dairy with almond milk or whatever. In my country, half a litre of almond milk is 10x times more expensive than a litre of milk. Soy milk is 5x times more expensive. And if you wanted to do your own milk, it would be incredibly MORE expensive, since nuts are super pricey. Also, a lot of people are allergic to nuts. There’s that. Being a vegetarian instead, I choose to buy my cheese and eggs from free range farms. But I have to buy “industrialized” milk at the supermarket, cause I’m too poor to do otherwise. And my 2 year old daughter needs milk.

As I noted, the price and feasibility of being vegan depends on where you live. I absolutely did not, anywhere in my post, state that veganism is always affordable, or even that it’s always workable. I completely understand that you can’t afford it. However, it’s also true that it’s not expensive everywhere. Here, almond milk isn’t all that much more expensive than dairy milk, and I actually don’t use it very frequently anyway, since I can get cashew pieces for pretty cheap and make dairy substitutes with those as a treat a couple times a week. It’s a case of different situations in different places.  I wasn’t attempting to shame anyone in any way. I was actually trying to acknowledge correct points on both sides. If you felt like I was coming down on you, I apologize.
