I have another round of the Burma Shave signs found on AZ Route 66 between Seligman and Grand Canyon Caverns. Because roadside signs suffer from weathering and theft, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona fully refreshed, added, and replaced the sets of replica signs around 2021 to encourage modern road-trippers to slow down and enjoy the drive.
A Father's Heart: A Beauty and the Beast Retelling
For the Four Loves Fairy Tale Challenge at @inklings-challenge
Let me tell you, I sure confused that Beast when I returned. Have you ever seen a cat pounce on its own tail? That was the look of confusion the Beast had when he saw me in his palace. Only this cat was enormousâstanding seven feet tall on his hind legsâblack as soot, with claws this long, and a mouth full of teeth like butcher knives.
"Where is your daughter?" he asked me. Yes, that's what he sounded likeâall deep and raspy, like he was growling and purring beneath his words.
"At home," I said.
"You did not bring her?"
âYou told me,â I told him, "that I could return to be devoured or send her to take my place. I returned.â
"She did not wish to save you?"
âI never told her. Do you think I could lay that kind of burden upon my own daughter? What sort of father do you take me for?â
He had taken me for a cowardly one, I guess, because it took me a long time to convince him that my daughters were all safely at home, and I didn't plan to fetch any of them. He didn't seem to know what to do with me after that. He wasn't as bloodthirsty as I'd have expected someone with that many teeth to be.

My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
Shoutout to people in the notes also mentioning people learning the language, I should've mentioned that really, given that I've been stuck reading German picture books myself while learning German.
Phenomenal spare wheel cover I walked past the other day
10 years ago today, the culmination of dozens of hours of puzzle-solving and collaboration across the globe concluded with the discovery of a statue in the Oregon woods. I was lucky enough to be one of the few people who was actually present at this historic event in Gravity Falls history, and unlucky enough to become the primary witness in the statue's devastating removal less than 24 hours later.
In honor of the 10th anniversary of the Cipher Hunt, I'm posting rare photos of the famous statue and the events that transpired!
Note: I did not take the statue. He was removed by the police due to a property dispute. I was simply there at the same time and documented as much of it as I could.
To begin, the journey up the hill and what it looked like at the time:
I am in the yellow shirt + Dipper hat, my sister is in the Mabel sweater that she made herself!
Next, Bill in his resting place and the beginning of his removal:
Note: Bill's hat was forcibly detached by the man who was hired to remove him from the property. There is a photo of me holding it, but I promise I did not break or steal his precious hat!
Bill being loaded into the man's truck and driven away:
As they were leaving, those of us who were at the scene all sang "We'll Meet Again" in hopes that our words may ring true. At this point, we did not know whether or not Bill would ever be seen again.
And finally, a couple hours and some ice cream later, we reconnected with Bill at the Reedsport Police Station where he briefly took up residence before finding his permanent home in Confusion Hill. This was, as far as I know, the last time his hat was seen.
My participation in the Cipher Hunt opened the doors to my career and is still something I consider one of my life's greatest defining moments. I cannot put into words how honored I am to have been part of the Hunt and how grateful I am to Alex Hirsch for creating something that made Gravity Falls real. I will never forget how it felt to have my flashlight beam pierce through the trees and land on the tip of that concrete hat for the first time. I WAS Dipper Pines in that moment.
Bill can still be found at his permanent home at Confusion Hill, where you can visit him and pay your disrespects.
Happy 10 years, Cipher Hunt.
it is really cool that there is now an official mÄori word for autism, created with input from autistic mÄori, and it was specifically coined to be nonjudgmental
quote from article:
âIn my experience, people with autism tend to have their own timing, spacing, pacing and life-rhythm, so I interpreted autism as âtakiwatangaâ, meaning âhis or her own time and spaceâ,â [Keri Opai] told government-funded MÄori Television.

There is a quality of books (or movies or shows) that I can best describe as âstickiness,â which is separate from being good or even enjoyable: a sticky book is one I just keep thinking about. Sometimes itâs because a book is very good (e.g. The Locked Tomb), and sometimes itâs because a book is very bad (e.g. ACOTAR), but there are also very good and very bad books that are slippery, such that when Iâm done reading them they slip from my thoughts like water from a hydrophobic surface.

The new Odyssey adaptation has inevitably gotten people talking about a Muppet version of it, and theyâre frequently suggesting Kermit as Odysseus, Miss Piggy as Penelope.
Iâm sorry but thatâs thinking way too small, hear me out:
We need to have Miss Piggy as Odysseus, and Kermit as Penelope.
Think about it⌠whoâs the more fickle, prideful, warlike one in that relationship? Who is absolutely ready to go ham, at a momentâs notice?
It ainât Kermit
Miss Piggy tied to the mast while Statler and Waldorf heckle her from the sea
Swordfish lives through the pursuit of the worldâs worst archers, and finally meets Grym! I canât tell if either of them are very enthusiastic about their situation, but at least Hopperâs happy!

The world needs more bookish gargoyles and grotesques
there's an entire webbed site for them. you're posting on it.
I wanted to know where these gargoyles came from, so I reverse searched them. Sorry the lettering is a little small. The only one I couldn't firmly identify was the one in the middle row on the left, which generally had no attribution. I gave both the attributions I could find.

Did you also learn the incredibly messed up Ladybug* song? "Ladybug Ladybug fly away home, your house is on fire, your children are gone"
Yep đ
I remember something similar but not this exactly
No???

*or Ladybird/whatever you call it
I saw a ladybug today and was slammed with this song for some reason. Why tf did my grandmother sing this to me??
Anyways here have a better Ladybug song to sing to kids:
(which is just listened to and they reference the song I'm talking about 𼲠I'm gonna go look up the origins of that now, toodles!)
Our version was âLadybug, ladybug, fly away. Your house is on fire and your children are asleep.â
Worse really. I donât remember who taught me. Why were we threatening the poor ladybugs?
