This is a very real threat. Women are already being prosecuted on these grounds - see, for example, the recent case of Nicola Packer (content warning that the case and the way it was handled by medics, the police and the CPS are incredibly distressing). And the last few years have seen an increase in these prosecutions.
It's hard not to think there are hidden backers driving this - like the conservative and religious groups (many based in the US) who have been backing transphobia in the UK.
