Writing a Katara is taken by the Southern Raiders AU
Just read Not For the Better by Triscribe (if you haven't yet GO READ IT, IT'S AMAZING) and I'M OBSESSED WITH THIS AU. My brain is hunting from spending 4 DAYS looking up lore to try and to build a slightly different version of this story but is sooo worth it. The premise I'm working with is essentially the same: Katara gets taken when the southern raiders come, but Lu Ten intercepts Yon Rha and decides to keep Katara while he thinks of a way to send her back home.
THERE'S SO MUCH THAT WE CAN BUILD FROM HERE. So. I'd like to put the blocks and pieces that we get from this premise down and build up until the series beginning. I think I'll divide this post in sections based on what major changes are made to the canon. (Looking back while editing I realized that mostly I'll be listing some changes I'd have to make in order for this AU to work and the long list of problems and questions that follows this changes LMAO)
So. In Triscribe's fic Lu Ten, with Iroh's help, gets Katara to the NWT. Let's start with this.
Katara:
Katara, as the responsible and caring girl that's been holding up for her family ever since her mother's passing, is originally the heart of the group. She is the catalyst that makes Aang start his journey and the glue that keeps the trio together. It's a pretty important and hard position to keep. By not being there when Aang gets out of the ice, her role in the group and the story immediately shifts (maybe Aang gets to be the heart of the group this time!) Since she's Aang true water bending master and still a very important piece in the story, I imagine the forces of destiny will do their damn best to bring them together.
In this case, there's two possibilities: like in Toph's case, Aang actively searches for his master with a bit of spiritual help, eventually meeting Katara in the NWT OR destiny makes Katara somehow bump with him before they get to the North Pole. Where the siege will eventually happen, without the avatar there to help. Which is a big problem and is generally disappointing to exclude the season finale, so this idea is off the table. BUT.
The thing with the second option is that I can't see Katara sitting on her butt waiting for the day she'll be able to see her family back. Even if she grew up partially in the NWT, she would definitely push against the tribe's traditions and try to get back home eventually. And this way destiny could bring her to Aang. HEY THIS IS JUST SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING, WHY NOT GO WITH THIS ROUTE THEN? Well, you see:
WHY would they go all the way to the North if they meet with Katara running away from the NWT? Let's leave it here and focus on the other side of the equation: Lu Ten.
Lu Ten:
One of the key points of this AU is not only Kya survives, but also Lu Ten.
Firstly, he doesn't go to Ba Sing Se. Originally Lu Ten was a part of the army but for the purposes of this AU we'll consider he joined the navy instead. Thus never getting to participate in the siege, and ending up crossing with the Southern Raiders on their way back to the FN with Katara.
By interfering with Yon Rha's mission and using his position as a prince he's able to save Katara, but this actions could definitely get Lu Ten in trouble. If the firelord got ear of the prince aiding the last waterbender, that could very well be the reincarnation of the avatar (that's what the raids were made for, right?) then he would be in BIG trouble. Especially if a certain someone decided to use this info in order to take the throne (more on that later.) So it is expected that Iroh would land him a hand, leaving Katara to grandpa's master Pakku's care.
And while in following years he doesn't ever get to see Katara again (unfortunately he was unable to write her bcs frozen eagles don't fly and Agna Qel'a mail system is inexistent) the course of his life can change drastically once Ozai learns about it. After all, as a good opportunist, he would probably be keeping tabs with his brother's every step, as well as his brother's heir.
Now, HOW TF does Ursa come up with the plan to kill Azulon and usurp the throne if Lu Ten is still alive? Idk man still working on it.
I would like to keep Ursa's role in Zuko and Ozai's storyline, but with Lu Ten alive, Zuko's storyline changes. If some fake death fuckery were to happen, which I don't plan to, then Zuko's story would basically be the same. But since we're not doing that, then he's going to start writing himself because I'm still debating on how does Ozai manages to usurp the throne without killing his brother and nephew (turns out planning a coup is pretty hard lol.)
Closing thoughts (for now):
I'm gonna stop here and say there's a lot more questions that need answers, especially regarding Iroh and Ursa, and Zuko's story. His entire arc is reliant on his family, much like Katara, and simple changes can make it very hard to not completely destroy his character and rebuild into something unrecognizable. And don't get me started on Sokka. That boy has so much to unpack once he reunites with Katara.
So! I'm gonna continue this in another post. Feel free to share your thoughts! I'm in love with this AU and I'm determined to turn it into a proper story eventually.
Peace out!

Cultural Fashion: Rich Lady Nails
I've gotten a few messages asking about the nails of different female characters in the past. I figure I'd do a master post covering nails in ATLA, as well their significance to Asian culture.
In general, long nails have historically been a status symbol for women in many parts of East and Southeast Asia, as they indicated that you did not have to perform physical labor for a living. This appreciation for long nails has also led to the development of unique nail coloring techniques and extravagant nail accessories.
Unsurprisingly, the four nail notables of the ATLA franchise have all been royalty or nobility: Azula, Ursa, Mai, & The Earth Queen.
Azula & Ursa
Interestingly, both Ursa and Azula style their nails the exact same way: Long, unpainted, and shaped like claws. For Ursa, it hints at her mama bear nature: She's someone who is both traditionally feminine, but also dangerous when she needs to be. For Azula, while I'm sure those elements are there as well, I can't help but wonder if it's also a subtle form of connection to her mother.
It's worth noting that, after Ozai abandoned her to become "Phoenix King", Azula is shown with blunt nails on the day of her coronation. It's very reflective of Azula's poor mental state that she eschewed something that was once a marker of her high-status and connection to her mother.
Mai
On a lighter note, the next fancy fingered female we'll be covering is Mai! Like Ursa and Azula, Mai also favors talon-like nails. Perhaps this is a popular nail shape in their world?
The most notable detail of Mai's nails is that they're painted a very dramatic black. From a meta perspective, her nail color is obviously meant to signal to the audience that she is the Avatar world's equivalent to a goth girl. Funnily enough, though, her black nails also happen to be quite appropriate for her design's primary cultural inspiration: Ming Dynasty China.
During the Ming Dynasty, red and black were the nail colors of choice for royalty and nobility, while commoner women were only allowed to color their nails light pink. I believe the prestige of these nail colors was for two reasons: First, red and black traditionally symbolized strength and power in Dynastic China. Second, it also took more time and resources to color nails intense colors like red and black compared to softer colors like light pink.
During the Ming Dynasty, nails were dyed using a paste that included beeswax, egg whites, gelatin, various plant pigments, alum, and gum arabic. The fingertips would then be wrapped in cloth or leaves, allowing the color to soak into the nail overnight. The next morning, the nails would be dyed a vibrant hue that would last for weeks.
The Earth Queen
The final boss of long nails in Avatar is Earth Queen Hou-Ting. As previously mentioned, long nails were a status symbol for much of East Asian history, representing a life free of toil and labor. The most extreme form of this status flexing were nail guards or zhÇ jiÇ tĂ o (ćç˛ĺĽ). As the name implies, these claw-like finger covers were meant to protect long nails from accidentally breaking or getting chipped. They were also quite decorative and gave the impression of having even longer nails than you already had. However, because nails guards were still quite cumbersome and impractical, even the most pampered of royalty typically only wore them on their ring and pinky fingers most of the time.
Fun Facts About East Asian Nail Culture
In traditional Chinese and Vietnamese culture, it is believed that pinkies that go up to or past the top joint of the ring finger attract wealth. To simulate the appearance of a long pinky, many men and women will grow out their pinky nail. Contrary to popular belief, it's not for cocaine-sniffing or nose-picking.
Nail salons in the United States are predominantly owned by East & Southeast Asians. Korean people own most of the nail salons in New York, while Vietnamese people own the majority of nail salons nationwide, particularly in California. There are two reasons for this phenomenon: Most obviously, nail tech is a low barrier-to-entry profession that does not require high language proficiency. Secondly, in the 1970s, actress Tippi Hedren started a nail tech program to provide job skills to Vietnam War refugees. This provided a relatively stable career path for many Asian immigrants. Growing up as the child of working-class Cambodian refugees, I knew a lot of nail techs.
Hey can you guys reblog Cheeseburger so he can take a sunbeam nap on lots of blogs. No other reason I just want you guys to see him.
So, Cheeseburger died on November 21st after an unfairly short battle with an unfairly rare cancer that is rarely seen in cats. I only got to spend a month with him after his diagnosis, and losing him has been the greatest heartbreak of my entire life so far. He was my best friend and my soul cat, and he was there for me when I was completely alone, for twelve long years.
I made this transparent PNG the night he died in preparation for one of the many ways I was going to memorialize him--a surface rug in his likeness that I planned on laying directly in the line of his favourite sunbeam. And I uploaded that PNG here, because this is the website where people post their cats.
I was not expecting the reception I got. Many people have pointed out that this post has more reblogs than likes, and how insane that is in 2025 when reblog culture is at an all time low. I didn't even talk about the fact that Burger passed away in the original post, it wasn't a tearjerker reblog bait or anything like that. People just loved Burger that much, in the same way I fell in love with him at first sight. He was such an ugly kitten.
Anyways, it's really special to me that so many people have reblogged my best friend. I made this PNG to memorialize him in a completely different way, and you all wound up doing just that in ways I never even imagined.
Thank you. Wherever he is, I know the sun is shining.

A Rant About Xie Lian, penned by someone who cannot express thoughts without a significant amount of Keysmash
I have feelings about Xie Lian in hualian and how I hate the fanon interpretation of it
BECAUSE XIE LIANâand you can argue with me on this but I will never change my mindâIS NOT A SAD LITTLE UWU BABY FEMININE BOY WHO ONLY SAYS "San Lang~" AND IS A PEACEMAKER ALL THE TIME
HE'S A STRONG MAN, PEAK MASCULINITY REALLY, WITH A HEART OF GOLD AND A BODY OF STEEL WHICH HE'S WILLING TO LEND TO THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO GOLD OF THEIR OWN OR STEEL TO PROTECT THEMSELVES WITH
HE'S GENTLE AND KIND, BUT HE'S FIRM AND UNYIELDING, AND HE'S CAPABLE OF CRUELTY AND HAS COMMITTED CRUELTY, BUT HE STILL BLEEDS LIKE ANY OTHER MAN
And I adore him and how complex he is but despise how watered down he gets and how Hua Cheng turned into his "savior" when yes Hua Cheng/Wu Ming, the mamn with the bamboo hat, and others may have been a reason to turn from his cruelty back to kindness, but ultimately it was Xie Lian's decision and his own conviction that makes him so strong and capable of making that choice
And I know there's more but I've run out of words XD

The prodigal son returnsâŚ.. again.
Xie Lian was definitely in the middle of scrap collecting when he got swept back to the Heavens.
Since we've had time to digest episode 8, I'd like to share my thoughts on the whole """Jax redemption scene"""
Thank you Sarcastic Chorus for feeding my overthinking brain, this was supposed to be just a comment on his video.
From my perspective, giving him the chance to not isolate himself and abstract was an act of survival. It's really just better to unite then feed on the paranoia of fearing Jax will betray them in a future situation, only where the stakes are actually real.
SĂł really the only thing that bothered me in 8 was the feeling that the episode count really impacted the series. It takes an incredible amount of emotional intelligence to move on from the bully's actions and stick together, especially for the little amount of time we've had with them (8 episodes isn't little but still). I feel like 1 or 2 more episodes were missing, especially before episode 6 where everyone seemed to have their shit somewhat together. Maybe if they at least made one more episode between 5 and 6 focused in Zooble, I would buy their actions at the beginning of episode 8.
They have just gotten back from the roller coaster of emotions that 7 ending was, Jax was looking for an excuse to be cast out of the group for sure, and it only takes Gangle to speak up that Zooble, from what I got have this processes running: "ok, I see what u mean. It huts like hell having put up w all this shit, but having u w me helps me cope. Maybe he deserves this too."
I feel it would be more impactful if we had time to see Zooble reflecting on their conversation about self love with Gangle in EP 6, and learning how they only understood this by helping Gangle, and how that helped themselves in return. It would be a good set up for them to accept Jax in the group.
BUT ANYWAYS, MAYBE I'M JUST THINKING TOO MUCH. I'M GONNA GO NOW.
