Sign this petition to help stop the bathroom ban in Scotland England and Wales for trans women. (See below for the original Facebook post which I saw this petition in).
I want the House of Commons to disapprove the Equality Act 2010: Draft Code of Practice for services, public functions and associations, 202
This is the email I sent to my MP, I decided to share it in order to give people an idea of the kind of thing you could say. It's my first time ever contacting my MP, but I feel very strongly about this issue and feel that bringing it to the attention of my MP is important.
Good evening (My MP),
I am writing from (my town), Scotland as an (my age) who is deeply concerned by the treatment and general sentiment towards trans people today. I recognise that for many people, the idea of trans identity can seem foreign or unimportant, as a cis person I can understand this lack of comprehension. But as a Human Being I cannot understand the lack of compassion, the lack of empathy being expressed by politicians (and my fellow citizens as a result) is both upsetting and frightening.
Not only would this bill put trans women at risk by removing their right to access appropriate public facilities, it also puts cis women (Females) at risk when such scrutiny is placed upon them. Will I be forced to provide proof that I am a 'real woman'? If so what would that entail?
How can I be sure that this bill won't lead to women like me (short hair and non-feminine frame/ fashion) being questioned by other users of facilities?
It's not difficult to imagine a situation where someone would look at me and not immediately assume I am female, because it has happened before. And the thought of being denied entry to the bathroom because I don't look a certain way is scary to me.
It also sounds a lot like discrimination to me.
I understand that people are ignorant and unaware of facts (such as trans women experiencing acts of violence more frequently than many other groups) which is the only explanation I can think of which would have lead to the creation of this bill.
But my question is: Why should I care who shares the bathroom with me?
I simply want to use the bathroom without questioning the sex of others in the area or having my own sex questioned.
I hope that if this petition does not get enough signatures that my email and I'm sure the emails of others, will bring this issue to yours and your colleagues' attention.
We will not accept this blatant discrimination.
From
(my name)
