Storytelling in DW

You know how there’s a split dialog about whether the Doctor is a good or bad person? Some civilizations praise the Doctor while others believe “doctor” to mean "destroyer of worlds.” This disagreement perfectly highlights the downfall of storytelling. Depending on what side of the story you hear, the good/bad guys will always be different. This is especially prevalent in history when both sides believe they are morally just. The Doctor and their companions may truly believe they are doing what is “right”, but to the creatures against the Doctor, the Doctor is a dangerous killing machine.

I feel like this is shown in the best detail in the episode “A Good Man Goes to War.” Here, Amy has hope that her Raggedy Man will come and save her. She tells Melody about the Doctor and how magnificent of a man he is. Also in the episode, a soldier named Lorna Bucket talks of her encounter with the Doctor and how the word doctor means “great warrior” on her planet. The Doctor insists that those who classify him as a warrior have it all wrong and, as the audience who favors the Doctor, we subconsciously agree with the Timelord. But if we, as spectators, take a step back from the glorious mystery that is the Doctor and focus on the things the Doctor has done to other species (from the species’ points of view), we can begin to understand how the Doctor is interpreted as a dangerous being drenched in the blood of a thousand species.

Although no one can deny that the Doctor has saved so many lives, think of everyone else he refused to or was unable to save. The Doctor is a magnificent being, we must all agree on that, but he is more dangerous and rightfully feared than what the show’s narration ever presents to the audience. To see this, all we have to do as the audience is look at the lone Timelord through the eyes of a species that understands and fears his power. These species show up in almost every episode, so this is not hard to do. The Doctor is a great being of fairytale proportion, but we must never forget that thousands of species were murdered both inadvertently and quite intentionally by the man who coins himself “The Doctor”: meaning healer, protector, and savior.
