The crowd roared in confused enthusiasm as Tenna gave a gracious flurry of low-FPS bows, pausing only for the occasional stink-nose at his audience plants who weren’t throwing enough 3D roses.
Eventually, the room fell silent. It was Senshi’s turn to speak.
He puffed out his chest, took a long, sweeping look over the audience… and shook his head.
“I can see not all of you are eating properly.”
The crowd murmured with embarrassment.
“I don’t know who needs to hear this, but it’s time to take the turkey out of your icebox. I have seen the ingenious technology with which your people store food... and I have also seen the waste which results from such convenience.
“The food you take had a life. Beasts grew fat on the grass of the field, plants grew from the sun’s rays, and mushrooms grew from minerals in the cracks of caves. And yet, it sits in your iceboxes, collecting moisture until it perishes.
“Eat what is given to you. Because its life will make you stronger, too.”
Without another word, Senshi left his podium and stepped away from the stage. The crowd murmured in confusion. “Is he really like that?” somebody said. “I only remember reblogging the photosets of him tripping and showing ass.”

Back in the Green Room, Tenna wrung his antennas nervously.
“Y-y-you think they liked me!? They HAD to!! I mean, I don’t know what Asgore was thinking, getting that weird haircut and running that food waste campaign, but… YOU thought I did good, didn’t you, Kris?”
Laios nodded aggressively, a streak of blue face paint peeling from his forehead.
“You did AMAZING, Tenna! By the way, now that we’ve seen all your insider campaign secrets, do you have any more videos of Susie? Especially her tail... If I could get a look at that, I could finally tell if she’s a dinosaur or --”
THWACK. Fake antlers butted Laios’s head.
“LAIOS?? Weren’t we dressed up to help SENSHI???” Marcille hissed, gesturing awkwardly with her hooves.
Suddenly, Tenna turned to the two adventurers.
“Hey, WAIT a second. SOMETHING’s not right here...”
Laios and Marcille held their breath.
“Where the heck are my POINTS!?”
Just then, the door opened. Chilchuck took one step into the room, whistling and holding a large bag.
Everyone turned to him.
Chilchuck paused, took a step backwards, and closed the door.
“CHILCHUCK!!!” yelled Tenna.
“How come Chilchuck got to stay Chilchuck!?” yelled Marcille at the same time.

Dustin was the first one that El had rushed to hug when their groups merged. She’d wrapped her arms around his neck and squeezed tightly as she panted against his shoulder — she’d ran all the way down the street when she’d noticed their group approaching, whilst Hopper straggled behind.
It was practically the first good thing to happen to them in hours, that both El and Hopper had found them in Roane Hill. Safety in numbers, sure, but Dustin had been fighting a stomach ache since knowing that they were also stuck there, that El was stuck there. It wasn’t the time to think on just how much he really did care for her, but fuck was he happy to have her in his arms.
“Dustin,” she breathed, her relieved smile quickly faltering as she pulled back and got a look at his face. He’d almost forgotten about the bruising around his nose until her hand reached up, fingers delicately touching the purple skin. It was hard not to think about the funny memory of her practically shoving her fingers into his mouth three years prior upon discovering his teeth had finally come in. “Your nose. What happened?”
“I fell off my bike, my face broke my fall I guess,” he smiled grimly through the lie, not missing Steve’s dirty look over El’s shoulder, and shot him back a quick glare in return before focusing back on the girl in front of him. “You’re okay?”
She nodded, smiled. “I am okay.”
Only then did he let her go, and she was quickly folded into Steve’s arms who hugged her tightly, then greeted by Nancy and Jonathan too. Hopper gave him a squeeze on his shoulder, and then all of them headed into the church where they’d been waiting for the other two for the past god knows how long.
They were barely through the doors when Hopper tossed a black pot at El and gestured over to one of the back pews. “Go eat some more, kid,” his eyes then shifted to Dustin. “You too.”
She looked like she was about to argue, but Dustin knew the look on her dad’s face. He was worried, the food was just an excuse to get her to rest, so the adults could talk. Ordinarily he would’ve argued that they had just as any right to the conversation as everyone else, but he could see how tired El was. He wanted her to rest, too.
“C’mon,” he gently touched her arm. “I could eat.”
They sat themselves on the back pew, and for the first time that night Dustin allowed himself a moment to just breathe. He was still sore from the fight, his nose throbbed whenever he focused on it, but he’d really been trying not to. He was fine.
El opened the pot Hopper had tossed her and grimaced as she pulled out one of the jerky sticks, which made Dustin snicker. “Not a fan?”
She shook her head, chewing dejectedly on one as she offered the pot up to him. He took one too, and for a moment they both ate in silence. There was so much to be said, to explain, but honestly he liked the moment of silence. He could tell she did, too. One small break before the battle continued.
“Do you think everyone else is okay?” She finally spoke up, eyes all soft with worry as she looked at him, looked right into him. It was one thing about El that was so intense, that made her like flames. She never looked away, stared right into his eyes whenever they talked.
Dustin swallowed the bite of jerky and nodded. “Yeah, yeah I bet they’re all kicking ass on the rightside up,” he tried to give her an encouraging smile, but her worried look hadn’t wavered, and he sighed. “We’ll get back to them in no time. You’re gonna see Mike again, El.” He tried to ignore the sting in his chest.
Only El frowned harder. Not what he’d been expecting.
“El?”
“Can I tell you something in…” El paused in a way that Dustin knew meant she was trying to think of a specific word, her eyebrows scrunched up a little. Where Mike would’ve jutted in and tried to find the word for her, Dustin kept silent, watching her face with a soft look on his own. “In confident.”
Even then he fought a little smile. “It’s, uh, in confidence, El,” he corrected softly, then nodded. “But of course.”
She took a deep breath. “Me and Mike are not dating anymore.”
Dustin just blinked at her like all of the air in the room had been sucked out. “What?”
“We have not been dating for a while.”
He just continued to blink. Were his hands going a little numb? “How long?”
“Since California.”
“El…” his voice had softened up so much as he leaned in closer to her. “That was last year.”
“Mike said it would be best to not tell anybody,” she shrugged a little. “Bigger fish to fry,” with the way she said the words, a little unsure, not flowing smoothly, he knew she was just repeating the saying Mike had used. “Everybody is sad, nobody needed to worry about us too,” it was only then she seemed to catch his expression and smiled softly. “I am okay, Dustin.”
It had never been lost on him how El and Mike had seemed a little… ill-suited for each other at times. It was part of why his jealousy burned so hot sometimes. He did his best to dwell on what-ifs, especially not anymore, but she deserved better. He could be better for her. To find out now that there was even the tiniest opportunity open really wasn’t fair. How was he supposed to focus on anything else?
“I’m… I’m sorry,” was all he could think to say for a moment. She didn’t answer and he frowned. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
She still wasn’t answering, but it was a little… weird. She wasn’t looking at him. She wasn’t looking at anything, actually. Her eyes were glazed over and she had started breathing weird. Her hands clenched into fists and the pot of jerky clattered to the floor and then his heart was in his throat.
“El? Are you okay?” He grabbed her shoulder and shook her and it did nothing. “El?” Starting to panic then he took a sharp breath and looked up then. “Hopper!”
Her breathing had sharpened by the time Hopper had jogged down the aisle towards them, and at the sight of her face his expression darkened. “You’ve gotta be shitting me.” He squeezed her shoulder before he walked over to one of the boarded up windows, peering outside.
Confusion over what he was doing quickly flipped to anger that he wasn’t paying attention to El. “Hopper-”
“Shh,” he hissed, waving his hand back at him. Only then did he notice the others were stood beside him, staring worriedly. “Everyone get down. Now.”
Dustin was squeezing her hand tightly. “What the hell is going on?”
“Block the doors,” Hopper hissed at the others, crouching to load his gun as he looked back at Dustin. “The military has some sort of weapon that…” he grimaced, pain on his face as he looked her over. She was panting hard now, trembling all over. “That affects her. If she can feel it they’re close,” he loaded the gun, the sound filling the space. “Get her down and… try and keep her quiet.”
Whilst the boys blocked the doors and Nancy was loading her own shotgun, Dustin turned back to El, heart beating sharply in his chest.
“Okay, okay okay, you’re okay,” he wrapped an arm around her back and eased her out of the seat, onto the floor between the one in front of them and the one they’d been sat on. She was rigid against him, panting quickly turning into pained whimpers which caused a lump to form in his throat. He hugged her gently against himself, her back up against his chest, and squeezed her tightly. “Can you hear me, El?”
She didn’t answer. Her eyes were wide and unfocused on the ceiling, shaking all over, whimpering through her teeth as she jerked in his arms.
He glanced up to see everyone else crouched below windows with their weapons, dread like a stone in his stomach when he saw headlights peeking through the slats onto the ceiling.
El whined sharply and, panicked, Dustin encouraged her head into the crook of his elbow so she could pant into his jacket instead, desperately trying to comfort her and muffle the sounds she was making.
For one single moment, there was blood on his hands. The floorboards were no longer floorboards, but the sharp gravel of the trailer park grounds. The body in his lap was cold and dead, eyes open but no longer seeing. Eddie Munson had just died in his arms.
Dustin screwed his eyes shut sharply, his own hands shaking as he held onto the body tighter, forcing himself to focus on all the signs that it was alive. Warm and trembling and whimpering into his arm, El was alive.
Dustin hugged her tighter, eyes prickling with tears at her muffled scream against his sleeve, and hearing the engine rumbling right outside the church he hunched over her and tucked her beneath his chin, encasing her completely against him. She screamed again, sharp and tearful, enough for his gut to clench and his eyes to blur with a film of tears, terrified for one moment that the engine would shut off and soldiers would storm inside any second. He just hunched over her a little more. If there was any gunfire he was not going to let her get hit.
Only, thankfully, there was no gunfire, the engine simply tumbled along and kept going until the sound started to fade.
El stopped screaming, eventually stopped panting, until she was simply slumped into his arms clinging to his sleeve.
He didn’t want to, but Dustin slowly unwrapped himself from around her and let himself look at her. “Hey,” he breathed, the most unsteady he’d felt all night. “Are you okay?”
El blinked a few times and nodded her head, took some deep breaths as she also sat up. Her hand didn’t leave his arm, though. “Yes,” she took another shaking breath in. “I am okay.”
Before he could dote on her any longer, Hopper was calling over to them that they needed to leave and find a new spot before the area was searched more thoroughly.
Dustin got to his feet and held out his hand for El, which she took with a squeeze so he could pull her to his feet.
In that moment he knew that he was not going to let anything happen to her.
