I struggle with the unknown. I run from what I donât know, and that seems pretty common. Or is it just me?
I never thought Iâd live to be past 22. I always thought Iâd die some tragic young death and my funeral would be some crazy somber party of sorts. That theyâd play Ed Sheeran or some other random celebrity would come through, and itâd turn into a benefit concert for other kids dealing with depression. That my life would be some sort of symbol for something. Anything. But Iâm 26. And still breathing.
Since Iâm 26, I should look at it as a gift, but instead Iâm terrified. Iâm really having to face my issues head on. I canât just run and hide anymore. What is life like as a girl who canât run to self injury? What does it feel like when joy comes? Will I enjoy the feeling? Will I ever be comfortable embracing the unknown? Will I always feel this scared?
Truth is, I probably will. Â I probably will always have some sort of fear of whatever is unknown. Itâs a rational and still irrational fear. I canât control everything, so I fear what I canât control, including being accepting of love and affection. I fear being served. I feel like Iâm a complainer or selfish, and therefore, start to feel guilty. As a result, I beat myself up a lot. There are a lot of things that I wish I could change about my mindset. The good news is now Iâm learning to be kind to myself.
I like writing. All of the writing. But I always put so much pressure on myself to write a certain amount of words by a certain deadline. And while deadlines are good and can increase a production, it forgets the quality when youâre just trying to put out work. Now I know why Lauryn Hill took so long to come back into the light. She wanted quality (I mean, I love her and all, but can a girl be on time and still have a quality show?). I really believe in being open to stuff. I really believe in loving myself now.
I didnât always believe I was worthy of love. I didnât believe that I could love myself. And it was all because I was scared of what love really could be. You mean it doesnât have to be a man looking me over like prime rib while he licks his lips? You mean it doesnât have to be a black eye? It doesnât mean I have to feel guilty over everything? Love can actually be inviting? Thatâs a thing? Yes, love is inviting, and safe... that is a hard concept for me to wrap my head around. As a result, I just sit here and wonder, WHAT HAVE I BEEN DOING WITH MY LIFE?!? Like, really, Gillian? You didnât want anyone to love you because youâre afraid of being actually taken care of? Of people helping you grow and serve you when you needed it? Like, love can be warm and you can give of yourself in a safe place once you feel met?Â
The beauty is, while the epiphany came in a natural way, it was built off of something that has supernaturally gripped my heart. My heart has been empty for a long time. There was a God sized hole there. As a result, I just kind of left myself open to wounding it more, growing pus and other gross things. It became septic (can you imagine a bathroom in your heart?). And now, Iâve properly been replacing pipes, cleaning out the wound (no matter how much it hurts), and understanding I donât have to be all things to all people all the time or all at once. I can be maybe half a thing to nobody but myself and do it some of the time. Thatâs called being kind to yourself. That is forgiving yourself and letting your emotions breathe.
I used to write for sanity. Now I write to create more space for love to grow.
